so when you're benching, you should have your arms at around a 90 degree angle when coming down towards the middle of your pecs while having your chest pumped out?
just wondering, because i have long arms and if i go past that, my shoulders get really strained

Most people have shoulder impingement with that much flare. An easy test is to setup on a bench with a broomstick (nearly weightless). If you can't get the broomstick to your chest without pulling then you don't need to use that much flare.
Read this and pay attention to bar path, grip width and elbow flare
