Following the recent ban on a certain 'substance' by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, and subsequently the UFC, known 'substance' user Chael Sonnen spoke about the ramifications of the announcement on Wednesday's episode of UFC Tonight, as well as Vitor Belfort's decision to drop out of a middleweight title fight at UFC 173.
"There's a lot of moving parts. I don't have all the answers," Sonnen said. "The bottom line is a certain substance is out. Now, as it relates to Vitor, I think this was a very genuine and sincere thing for him. Here's the problem that I have: a fighter that said seven days ago, ‘I need a certain substance or I can't do this,' and then all of a sudden goes, ‘Well, I'll just stop the substance.' I find that very disingenuous.
"I am potentially in that same field. If this retires guys, then it retires guys. The rules are the rules, and the rules need to be followed. Personally, sorry to be long winded about this, but I'm going through this myself, where I've had to stop a certain substance with the hope that we can find a new way to gain the results of upping a certain hormone to stay at a healthy level. If it doesn't work, I may have to stop the sport. And it's as simple as that."

Some guys can cash in on the genetic lottery. Others are stuck where they are. Ironically, this does the exact opposite of what is intended by "creating a level playing field".

any time a committee does something it ****s up the thing it was trying to do
proof: every committee ever.
look i get that people think it is cheating, or it is unsafe, but (delete my comment if i go too far), but it is unsafe for them NOT to do it. Im sure injury rate will go up (which is a huge thing people complain about). recovery time goes waaaaaaay up. It allow fighters to maintain fighting shape and be ready to fight more often (another thing people hate). it is just safer all around it to be allowed.

Sounds fair to me. He can still use his banned substance, he just can't compete on it. I've been sick of this guy for a long time anyway so good riddance.

No, I remember how ridiculously high his levels were. My point was more that Chael is acknowledging the issues and admitting his need for the treatment while Vitor not only said he would drop the treatment for a title shot, but he's just going to fight clean now with no issue. He basically admitted that he didn't need it. Are they both cheaters? No doubt, but Chael brings a bit of transparency while Vitor was clearly cheating the system the entire time
And this. Read the sticky, guys.

Dr. Benjamin: Was Chael Sonnen a big time collegiate wrestler? Yes he was. I'm going to opine and say to you, there's no way in the world you get to the level of collegiate wrestling that Chael Sonnen was at, with hypogonadism. Let me explain to you why. Hypogonadism means that the testes did not produce enough ************ for one to normally mature. He wasn't on *** as a teenager. He became this big, muscled up monster and NCAA wrestler with hypogonadism? Hell no.
The truth of the matter is, you could never get to that level, because you're not going to have the muscle mass and strength to get you there. They're going to run you over. Your body will not allow you to develop enough muscle and strength to compete at your size. If he has hypogonadism, it's from one thing, and one thing only, because he treated himself with ******** in the past, and wrecked his testes. That's it.
Stephie Daniels: Once incurred, is that condition a permanent one?
Dr. Benjamin: That's the thing that people don't appreciate. If you use ********, it can harm your testes in a fashion that's permanent. When these guys use ******** to compete, guess what? They're more than likely going to need ******** for the rest of their lives just to be normal, because now they've destroyed or significantly injured their hormone producing glands, your testes, and they're never going to work correctly again.Last edited by John L; 03-06-2014 at 07:30 PM.

lol at posting anything dr benjammin says. if you've read anything he has said on mmajunkie for the past several years you'd know he is shill. all he does is throw out his assumptions about these guys and passes them off as fact. he's never treated any of these guys in question yet he seems to think he knows their entire medical histories. he isnt even an endocrinologist.

There is nothing unbelievable about that. People are so blinded by hatred that they can't give him his due even when he is 100% correct anyway. I mean there are still people out there who think that he didn't get wronged by the ref in the first Filho fight, they still think Sonnen tapped.

No...
1. Chael pissed hot. Way over board without ever applying for an exemption to use.
2. Chael proceeded to lie everywhere he could that he had told Kizer he was doing it prior to the fight.
Honesty and integrity.. not even once.

Pretty much. It's been in the rules for some time, I've just been a letting it slide a bit because it has been such a hot news point in MMA. I double checked myself with the site admin on it and was instructed to inforce the zero tolerance rule for any drug discussion....recreational or PEDs.
Like the rule or not, it is what it is....and it's the reason this thread is so hacked up as I've had to delete MULTIPLE posts.
There is a sticky to make sure everyone was aware of the rules on this.Last edited by cgc; 03-07-2014 at 07:36 AM.
