What is your definition of disease?

At what level of excess weight do you consider someone obese?

You cannot compare lung cancer to obesity, seeing as lung cancer for a lot of people comes without smoking.

Are you referring to a certain type of CVD? because you can get all of them without being a fatty, just because cardio strengthens you CVD it doesn't make it invincible

the MAJORITY of people get lung cancer because of smoking. notice how I specifically mention smokers not the random person who gets lung cancer which is a MINORITY.

exactly my point with cvd. the same factors that lead to obesity also lead to cvd with the exception of one group has more fat than the other.

i agree, obesity is a disease. if someone gets cancer from smoking they have a disease, albeit a self inflicted one. i have less sympathy for fatties than for, say, someone born with a disease through no fault of their own. but both are undeniably diseases by definition

exactly. at the same time however, i would argue that lack of empathy and sympathy is a major reason why treatment fails for obese people in regards to continual weight loss and overall improvement.

Eating consistently in a caloric surplus is and will factually adding more adipose tissue. With every other disease you can do things to decrease risk, but with obesity you can literally have control of it 100% (of course some outliers)

Control of your 'disease' vs Manipulating risk percentages (ultimately it's out of your hands, unlike obesity)

By definition, any malady that prevents normal operation of the body is a 'disease'. That would include alcoholism, broken bones, and yes - obesity.

We don't know all the genes involved in the variables of weight gain. Not even close. Moreover, there are non-genetic, vertically transmitted characteristics that play significant roles in regard to digestion/metabolism/etc.

I know that obesity significantly increases your chances for other diseases, but i'm solely focused on obesity being the only disease that we ultimately have control over. Where as with all the others you can just improve your chances of not getting. I do know on paper it's a disease, but it's a very a typical disease due to the fact that it is voluntarily brought upon yourself.

Obesity was only recently considered under the guise of a disease very recently. It was a decision based on statistics, and not backed by science.

Agree w/ OP a bit. A lot has to do with genetics, but I don't think that's an excuse for anything. Everyone has a disadvantage they have to deal with.

While I have always known it was a disease (one in which I suffered from ...see sig) I have problems with you asserting that a disease caused by life style choices shouldn't be treated by correcting those lifestyle choices.

Proper diet and exercise should be the treatment for this disease, a cocktail of side effect causing drugs can't compare to proper nutritional education and proper exercise.

A persons inability to stick with a habit shouldn't mean the treatment is ineffective ...it means the person is weak
