Highlights:
-High protein intake is linked to increased cancer, diabetes, and overall mortality
-High IGF-1 levels increased the relationship between mortality and high protein
-Higher protein consumption may be protective for older adults
-Plant-derived proteins are associated with lower mortality than animal-derived proteins
Summary
Mice and humans with growth hormone receptor/IGF-1 deficiencies display major reductions in age-related diseases. Because protein restriction reduces GHR-IGF-1 activity, we examined links between protein intake and mortality. Respondents aged 5065 reporting high protein intake had a 75% increase in overall mortality and a 4-fold increase in cancer death risk during the following 18 years. These associations were either abolished or attenuated if the proteins were plant derived. Conversely, high protein intake was associated with reduced cancer and overall mortality in respondents over 65, but a 5-fold increase in diabetes mortality across all ages. Mouse studies confirmed the effect of high protein intake and GHR-IGF-1 signaling on the incidence and progression of breast and melanoma tumors, but also the detrimental effects of a low protein diet in the very old. These results suggest that low protein intake during middle age followed by moderate to high protein consumption in old adults may optimize healthspan and longevity.

only for 65 older, dont take **** out of context inbred.
hahaha misc arm-chair scientists think they are smarter than studies. im out.
>"High-protein" diet group more than 8 times as likely to report a history of diabetes
>"High-protein" diet group twice as likely to report they've changed their diet for health reasons
>"High-protein" diet group 10 times as likely to die due to diabetes

correlation =/= cause-effect
There are several cautions that authors themselves include that separate the actual study from the media hype and catch phrases:
1) Results showed that both the moderate and high protein intake groups had higher risks of diabetes mortality compared to participants in the low protein group.
2) We underline that our hazard ratios and confidence intervals may be inflated due to our sample size and the extremely low incidence of diabetes mortality in the low protein group.
In addition, things to consider are:
1) High protein-Cancer/Diabetes link is only correlative. Authors actual point is higher IGF1 serum levels to be associated with Cancer/Diabetes. There isn't a study that I could find where IGF1 levels have been systematically examined in human population of all ethinicities/age groups/genders, so in the end, this could simply be that IGF1 naturally increases with age...
2) Only first two figures of the paper are drawn from human data. The rest, based on authors' hypothesis that high protein diet increases serum IGF1, which in turn is linked to higher incidence of cancer and diabetes, and authors use a mouse and yeast model to prove their point. While their observations could be entirely true in mice and yeast, they may not have any relevance to human, as is many times the case with using model organisms.
3) Study uses a self reporting diet mechanism by the subjects, meaning it's not scientifically controlled, and highly subjective.
4) The population age with the highest incidence is 50 years or above. This is the age group that grew up in the 60s and 70s, when the awareness to hazards of, for example corn syrup and growth hormones on live stock, were not well unterstood, and their use not well regulated...
Oh, and nice appeal to authority fallacy you used against Wisdommaster.
Fuking ******* red.

where is the mention of pre-existing health conditions of the groups, activity levels and other controls?
I could do a study showing people who eat high protein live longer if I neglect to mention that the low protein group is consisting of diabetic whales and the high protein group are world class athletes
