why is this still a story?
she was a mentally messed up girl who thought the world was after her and climbed into a water tank. Depends on the person-she might have been perfectly calm/appeared normal until she got there & then her fantasy world began-perhaps something triggered it like imagining this game thing she liked. Mental illness is not always 24/7-sometimes people can act perfectly rationally or near enough to get by for long periods & then they just flip.

How about another possibility. She mentioned mexican and italian stalkers. What if these guys knew she was crazy and they started phucking with her. Putting on masks and making ghost noises, teasing her and ****, then turning to eachother and laughing, thinking it was hilarious. Maybe one of them even said, "you have to get to the rooftop and escape through the drains". Should they have any responsibility? All hypothetical.

Did quite a bit of research on this case myself. Much of it summarized on the websleuth's forum:
http://www.websleuths.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=514
After going through countless discussions and all available evidence (incl autopsy report, video, various US/foreign/Chinese news articles, video analysis, etc.) I've got a pretty good feel as to what the possibilities are. But despite what many will tell you, this case is not "solved". It is closed, due to a lack of evidence. The conclusion of "accidental death" was simply reached through a lack of evidence towards any other manner of death. Additionally, in the autopsy report the "cause of death" was originally written as "Undetermined". This was later crossed out by another ME and changed to "Accidental". Keep in mind that many/most people you are in contact with on a daily basis are mentally ill in one way or another. Many of these are bi-polar. Being diagnosed as mentally ill or bi-polar does not make you necessarily any more crazy than those you meet on a day to day basis. The fact that she was diagnosed, and medically/pharmaceutically treated also works against the idea that she did something completely off the wall. If others that knew her believed that she was a complete nutcase, including her doctor(s), she would have been put in a treatment facility. Additionally, her family/friends would have been unlikely to let her travel to another country, alone, and then when she was found dead say they didn't believe it was suicide (see father's comments recently).
So to me, the likelihood of accidental vs homicide is about 50/50. Couple of general notes on the case, not leaning in one direction or another:
1.) She was leaning in very close to the elevator buttons because she did not have her glasses on. They were found in her room.
2.) The elevator doors did not close because she pressed all the middle-row buttons, including "door hold", which holds the door in that hotel for ~ 2 minutes.
3.) The change in wall color is due to the fact that the elevator closed and went to another floor, with another color paint.
4.) The cuts in the video are likely due to a "motion sensor" on the camera system that stops the taping when it does not see any significant movement going on.
5.) She was on quite a few medications, including wellbutrin, effexor, and 2 mood stabilizers. These were all found in her system at expected amounts.
6.) Many drugs, both rx and illicit, would not necessarily be in her system when her body was found 2 weeks later. Some "rape" drugs could have been out of her system within hours or less of administration. Enough to get her into the tank, but basically be gone before her body was discovered.
7.) She was seen on the 14th floor in the elevator, but her room was on the 4th. Additionally, one of the tenants reported a very loud noise that knocked him out of bed the night she went missing. His room was on 3, possibly below hers.
8.) The coroner did not find any signs of rape or assault - but certain things were not done lab-wise, such as the fingernail kits. Additionally, her body was in a state of decomposition when found, and some signs would have been hidden by then. Also, certain means of assault like strangulation do not always leave much evidence.
9.) Her family disputes the official findings of "accidental death" and also has a pending lawsuit against the hotel.
10.) A misc'er above mentioned that she was known by others at her school to be mental (and possibly obsessed with stalkers). This would back up a paranoid/mania theory that she was acting out.
11.) She clearly walked into the elevator, pressed the buttons, and expected it to close. When this did not happen, she panicked and hid in the corner, as if she was afraid someone was ****ing with her. Her further actions suggest confusion, frustration, and paranoia. All of this could be due to mental illness, or due to actual threats she was aware of.
12.) The police report has not been released publicly. It may contain information that would shed further light on her final hours and state of mind. Details of her phones (one of which she supposedly lost 2 nights earlier at an LA bar) and her computer may have contained useful information, including whether she had been planning to meet someone in LA, possibly someone she only knew through the internet. This police report might also include additional CCTV evidence, including her previous use of the elevator and whether she was with anyone and whether she previously exhibited symptoms of mental illness.
13.) The Cecil does not have much as far as video cameras, just the main entrance and the elevators.
14.) The door going to the roof was not locked and apparently the battery on its alarm was dead at the time. Many have accessed the roof since this case and it is still easily accessible. However, for someone that did not know much about the hotel, it seems strange that she would have known that the alarm would not sound and that the roof door was unlocked. Signs and such indicated otherwise. Once on the roof, walking over to the water tanks and crawling into a hole in the one at the back (which her slim body could only narrowly fit through) seems highly improbable.
15.) If the killer was highly familiar with the hotel, the rooftop water tank would be a reasonable choice as it is unlikely search dogs would have scented it. They would not want to keep the body in their room as they knew the police might very well get a search warrant for various rooms. Additionally, they felt it was risky to take the body out of their room (even covered up) without risking some suspicion by hotel staff or security.
16.) Questions still remain as to why the narrow opening on top of the water tank was closed. If she had crawled in herself, it would have been very difficult to close the mechanism while also jumping in.
17.) There are a number of odd characters that have stayed at the hotel, incl sex offenders. Some of these are "residents" that actually live at the hotel on the upper floors. One such character (not a known sex offender) that some have connected to Elisa Lam is a musician named Morbid. Google Elisa Lam and Morbid and you'll find some interesting stuff.
18.) Lots of weird connections to the movie Dark Water. If this was a ritual/sacrifice type murder then one could make a lot of connections. Alternately, if she was mentally ill and had seen this movie, it is possible she was recreating it.
19.) Medical examiner found that she died through drowning due to water in the lungs and certain secretions there that indicate aspiration. This however does not preclude drowning at another location (such as a bathtub) then being placed in the water tank.
20.) Lots of strange/suggestive stuff on her social media. One picture she posted that has always creeped me out:

I didn't say she was but the people with serious mental illnesses you can obviously tell.
If you have ever been to a big city you will run into a person who is arguing with themselves or making ludicrous statements about how the CIA is after them.
These are the people who I was referring to who would seem incompetent to plan any sort of function like flying to a different city.
Since people dont believe she was drugged. She was sure acting like one of those crazy people you see on the streets. But I don't understand how you can be normal one day to going completely crazy a couple hours later.

Did anyone ever find out the post dates of when that "Morbid" guy wrote all that? If any of that **** was written before she was found that's suspect as hell. If it was all after she was found, then he's just being an insensitive ass because he thinks it makes him look dark since he's one of those goth guys.
Edit: Strong Feb 3 post, she was found on the 19th. I guess you can assume that some of the other posts were before too. The problem is that because he's some goth *******, it's likely not the first time he's written that he's some sort of killer or death bringer.Last edited by Aperture; 02-23-2014 at 12:51 PM.

The information is in that ATS link I believe. Don't remember the specifics, but the reason he seems suspect like is that the dates of his posts match up with her timeline. As in, he posted "New Project" on Jan 28th, which I believe is the day after she arrived at the Cecil. He "finished the project like the day of or the day after she disappeared/stopped contacting her family. Also he was posting this creepy videos on youtube up until the 28th, then stopped and took several down in the next day or so. Some forums say that he was staying at the the Cecil at this time and posting videos that included shots from inside the hotel. Also, she posted on some social media blog that she met some guy with tattoos at the hotel and liked him. Her above photo in the dark jacket seems kind of goth to me.

Keep in mind that this all happened at the same time as the Christopher Dorner situation, so a lot of LAPD resources were diverted and some have suggested that they did not do a thorough job. Keep in mind that they checked out the building very soon after she went missing. She had been in contact with her family several times a day so they contacted the police within say a day or so of her going missing. The first time the police went to the building they did not find anything. It wasn't until weeks later when the water problems got noticed by hotel staff/tenants that she was discovered. LAPD has a lot of **** to deal with. This is not to say that the purposely did a poor job on this case, but amateur websleuths have a lot more time on their hands to dig through various theories than the LAPD. That being said, we do not really know specifically how much/how little was done by detectives. The police report can only be obtained through family members I believe, it is not made public. That being said, I think this case would make a very interesting documentary and if that was done perhaps the report would be obtained in some way.

We don't know if he was or wasn't, if they got her cell phone or computer then they might of found the connection and questioned him. But if it was all premeditated like his "new project" comment could suggest, then he could of had an alibi ready beforehand.
The thing is we'll never know every detail of the case, and I'm willing to believe what the police concluded is the truth. Mainly because I believe that they would of done their job and ran down leads like who she was talking to in the city and what she was doing there.
Pretty much any theory ITT or elsewhere could be refuted but it doesn't always mean it's not possible.
