Those on the streets say they are struggling over the future development of the country - will it be a country based on the rule of law, or Russian-style oligarchy and closed interests?
The protests broke out after President Viktor Yanukovych's government rejected a far-reaching accord with the European Union in November 2013 in favour of stronger ties with Russia. Thousands of people, outraged that a long-standing aspiration for integration with Europe had been ditched overnight, poured into central Kiev for peaceful protests. They have occupied Independence Square, known as Maidan, ever since.
Several developments - including violent police attacks on student protesters, severe new anti-protests laws, and the abduction and beating of opposition activists - have caused the demonstrations to spread and intensify. For many people, they are now less about Europe than about getting rid of a president they believe is clinging to power and serving the interests of his own close circle and Moscow.

Supplementing the above post, seemed like a big factor was government trying to crush any opposition or the peoples opinion. There's a nice infographic of it somewhere. 10 or so laws such as 6 years prison for blocking the entrance to a gov't building, 3 years for filming the police, 10 for organizing a demonstration. Dunno where it came in the timeline of events though.

Badass? Both police and protesters are being critically injured/killed. Business owners getting their sh!t destroyed/looted, etc. Essentially they are acting like uncivilized animals and have set their city back in time... Literally. Is the most efficient way they can think of to handle the situation is destroy the city and hurt/kill people?
What amazes me most is how pussified law enforcement is over there. Try to throw a brick or molotov cocktail at a cop in America and you'll get shot about 20 times before said item even takes flight into the air.

There's a few aspects to the Ukraine crisis that some have forgotten to mention, namely, that there is a strong neo nazi soccer hooligan strain in the "protesters"
This is an attempted colour revolution, on the model of the orange revolution of a few years back. These colour revolutions are essentially prepackaged revolutions developed by western intelligence services to act as window dressing and soak up TV airtime/headlines while they carry out a coup behind the scenes. This is the same model employed previously in Syria, Iran, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia etc. these are NOT organic revolutions, they are foreign destabilizations
Cliffs:
-the west wants regime change to replace the democratically elected gov't of ukraine with a weaker and friendlier regime
-pre planned and controlled by western intelligence
-hooligans, neo nazis etc are more than happy to stir chit up
-gov't worried about negative press so they tolerated them too long and now it's out of hand
