Rode in four inches of fresh snow this morning. Damn snow blinded me and froze my face even with it nearly completely covered.
I've mastered winter riding. Everyone I work with either called off or was at least a half hour late, but I was early. **** modern conveyances.Misc Bicycle Club - https://www.strava.com/clubs/armstrongballclub

How does it make sense? Road biking is kinda boring to me. Seems like you can just zone out more. For the most part you don't have to pick your lines or worry about changes in road conditions or numerous obstacles. You find a cadence you want to keep and make appropriate gear changes. Perhaps that's a bit of an oversimplification but it doesn't seem as dynamic as MTB to me.

These are my feelings as well. I almost bought one a few years back, but was having too much fun on the MTB. I still may pickup one down the road, but I am way too busy with work at the moment. Seems if I was to get a good road ride in it would require at least a few hours of riding, wouldnt it?

The best thing I ever bought is a powermeter (Powertap). I can do a one hour ride testing my threshold power. I can do 6 x 1 minute intervals, takes about 45 minutes total. I can do (3) 5 minute intervals. I can do 10 second sprint intervals. I load all of the data into training peaks, and track progress. Bottom line you can get a good workout in 30 to 40 minutes up to 10 hours. Choice is yours.

whatttt?!?!?
try to zone out in a group or solo at 22-25mph...
Maybe if u live in the country u could just pedal away on straight routes but in rhode island there is a lot of climbing, bad roads, crap on the ground, etc...
For example I f'ed up my 808 front during a race last sept cause I missed a piece of medal on the ground; that is pretty much the same as mtb... takes your eyes of the ground or don't pick the proper lines and zhit is going to happen.Last edited by camaleom; 02-06-2014 at 09:21 AM.

Training with power isn't cheap... and the $700 doesn't include a computer either. It can be a pretty valuable tool though, but certainly not needed for recreational riding.
For sure, but I am glad to have given my borrowed powertap back. I like things simple, no power, no HR monitor, etc...IM Tri Crew - Misc Photog Crew - ♞ Misc Dominant Crew ♞ - Bicycle Brah Crew - Misc Running Crew - Alpine Ski Crew

It's just different. I maintain that you have to have better physical fitness than MTB to do well. Sustained efforts are very taxing on the lungs. When the road gets wet it becomes a different animal. Striping becomes as slick as ice and corners are a bish and let's not forget about having to be on the road with texting drivers. When riding on a pace line it takes concentration to make sure you don't slam into the wheel in front of you and cause a pile up. When in a pace line you can be anywhere from inches to 3 feet from the wheel in front of you with your wheel. Oh sh!t moments happen. For some reason, someone up front will check up on their brakes and make everyone behind them do the same. Happened to me last season. My normal group has 4 skill levels from fastest to slowest. I wasn't feeling it so I stayed back with the second fastest group with people I'm not used to riding with and we were moving along at about 23mph when the guy in front of me locked his rear wheel up for no apparent reason. My bail out was to the left and he slid to the left but recovered as did I when I locked my rear wheel up. A new tire later and 5 beers and I'm good to go again.
MTB takes more skill and it does offer more changes than a typical road ride. I don't get to do as much as I would like but what I've done I love. But I like the more social nature of road riding compared to trail riding.

You will be in for a grand or so, but you can always compete with yourself. If you did 350 watts for 20 minutes last week you will want to do better. Watts are the true measure of performance on a bike. Speed in influenced by terrain, wind ect. Heart rate is influenced by hydration sleep ect. Watts are watts

Got my new ride today. 10% discount from the shop because I am an IMBA member. Got Shimano M540s on backorder for next week. I am going to set up tubeless before the Barry Roubaix race next month.
