I have $140,000 in school debt. Should I continue school or pick up a job?

I'm basically in the same situation as you, dropped out of law school and no experience expect summer jobs. Only difference is I have 0 debt. Makes me feel a lot better about myself.

Just imagine what you could have done with $140k.

Get a job for the government or non-profit. Make 10 years worth of payments and get your debt forgiven under the public service loan forgiveness program.

This, join the military and learn a trade that will transfer to civilian after your 10 years are up if you decide to get out.

As I said in the previous thread that $140k is a huge burden and I don't envy you. But, you're only 22, still very young - you definitely haven't ruined your life. To fix it though you're gonna have to get used to the idea of working very hard and not having much fun until you've paid it off.

Engineering is what I'm familiar with so that's what I'll talk about. If you get a good gpa 3.4+ and have some work experince from summer jobs or working for a professor, you will get a reasonably paying job, ~$60k. With that salary, assuming you can live frugally, you could pay off your loans in maybe 10 years or so even if you accumulate another $60k for the engineering degree. Sounds like a long time and a raw deal, and it is, but with the college bubble it's not too uncommon of a situation.

This all hinges on you developing some real discipline to succeed in engineering, though, so you'd have to be prepared to put int 80 hour weeks of studying/working for your degree, especially if you don't have natural talent for engineering.

Something really needs to be done about college loans though; they had no business offering you $140k.

no, I really didn't. I wasn't thinking at all. I was always unstable with what I wanted to do with my life. I was too stupid to even pull out of college. I kept staying for absolutely no reason.

With that much debt you should be working in a field where you have a chance of landing a decent job that earns enough to pay it off within a decade. You should have done your research on the field you most want to be in and considering your skill and knowledge.

hey thanks for the engineering input, but honestly I don't think I'm going to make it with engineering. I don't have the discipline or mentality to sit down for hours and hours to drill information into my head.

I had just $1200 in debt when I finished school...felt good paying it off within 2 years after finishing school. $140K is way too much unless it is med or law school.

i went back to school at 25 and theres a lot of 35+ yr olds, so youre actually pretty young to start a new field

I knew I was failing. I really don't have an answer to why I didn't just drop out. I really don't know why. I guess I never really thought about school. I didn't care because school wasn't important at that time. More important was my social life I was trying to recover after depression.
