But he could still be using this as a chance to escalate. To show off his personality. And strength.

It could be he that has no balls to take it a different direction.

You just don't know that yet. What if he invites you home 1 night? Or let a date "happen" like if you got hungry and he paid for the meal.

It could be a date without it originally being a date.

Or it could be he never escalates, not due to "he's just not that interested in you" but no balls.
