AS it turned out he had, but in order for the judges to focus their critique on the back, it couldn't have been apparent early on...its weird actually.

Don't think drugs hit one specif bodypart, so something else must have done the trick, turning a bodypart that needed improvement to a bodypart that is so developed its almost out of proportion with the rest of his physique.
Genetics, for example no matter how Ben Pakulski trains he will not get a back equivalent too that of a Phil, Kai, Wolf etc, genetics are the main contributor to any top level physique.

^Apparently the judges said Phils back was a weak point early in his career...

It had detail but lacked size, he improved it a WHOLE lot to make as it is today, but it isn't as much of a standout bodypart or even out of proportion as it was with Dorian. That pic really makes his arm assymetry clear.

Yeah his progress was ridiculous from 2005-2011

Anyway my point was genetics will be the determining factor of your end physique, not training.

I dont think the pre-exhaust caused the biceps tear. The point of the method was to fatigue his lats so that on pulling movements he could fully utilise his lats without his smaller, weaker biceps failing first. Theres no reason to think this placed any more stress on the biceps than if he'd rowed first. You also have to assume that with his precise and scientific approach to training he would have stopped using the pre-exhaust if he did feel his biceps taking more stress.

Anyway thats all besides the point. He was virtually partial curling over 180kilos, pre-exhuast or not, you're asking for it.

Common sense: first heavy work when you're fresh, then the lighter exercises. So big muscles first, then the smaller ones. And first heavy compounds and then isolation, not the other way around. The rest time has to be long enough between muscles/exercises/sets, that's why doing two or more exercises/sets in a row with no rest works only when you want to obtain some kind of cardio effect or burn calories
    well just..no..

your biceps are the weak link anyway. If your lats were completely fresh, you still can't row more than the biceps can handle. Pre exhausting them should mean less weight on the compound, and less risk.
that said, he admitted most of his injuries, including this one, were by using off season weights when he was into his contest diet, and that is the one thing he would do differently if he were to do it all again

I really hope that pic is just for show.

Full, steady and in control contractions with 4 plates seems slightly difficult..

I, on the other hand am not an Olympia winner. So what do I know.

He said he tore his bicep because he had nagging small injuries that he didn't take care of over time; plus he also said that he had the bad habit of pushing his body too hard even during precontest. His form is perfect...if you think underhanded rowing is dangerous...well you are just clueless.

It's a fairly risky exercise to go heavy on. That's accepted by just about everyone.

let me tell you, from one who has been through these wars for many years: your biggest enemy is NOT a pathological tear ( never to be confused with micro-tearing ), but rather, the bane of our existence in the long run is INFLAMMATION.

various forms of tendonitis, are what eventually lead to layoffs....and they are basically inevitable....

serious muscle tearing is actually rare, and, for people who are "natural", even rarer......

but those damn "ITIS" thingies: they are persistent...and worse: they force you into bad habits and UNBALANCED movements as you try to compensate....

and how to prevent them? well: easier said than done, because they are all basically REPETITIVE STRESS events that are cumulative: and our routines are just asking for them!

the body has a mind of it's own: let me say this: no matter HOW PERFECT your form is, at any given moment in time, any one of your tendons/attachments/joints, etc, can simply say: I'VE HAD IT, I think I'll go ballistic....
Lift as MUCH as you can, for as MANY reps as you can,
while in complete control of the exercise.

Great picture and I beleive doing rows underhanded , at least I feel them for myself, hit the lower lats a little more than underhand. Dorian was Mr. O five times for a reason!

Phil Heath loves doing underhand grip barbell rows. Hope he doesn't ruin those awesome arms with a biceps tear.

That'd be the saddest day in the history of our sport.

Things happen but i have yet to see him go past 325lbs lb rows. Not saying it's not a lot of weight but nothing in Yates's neighborhood. Would be a shame indeed.

    The Yates mullet was awesome.

He must of been a 80's hair metal fan.

Maybe he trained to Journey and Whitesnake songs.
