my company got called to go salvage a sunk (38') boat about 6 days ago when it was 12 degrees outside. on the water with wind chill it was suppose to be something like negative 35, and we had wind blowing spray on us, and we were raising a sunk boat. would love to see your scrawny little ass out there dealing with it.
brb there are some people who are stupid in the south, and dont know how to deal with different weather conditions. Ergo they are all idiots lolololololol
the main reason you see pictures like the one in OP is because our cities aren't prepared for weather like that. we don't have a fleet of snow plows, and salt trucks. when we get bad weather they try to attend to the major roads (and they do a poor job at that) but everything else doesn't get touched. dont get me wrong a lot of people down here cant drive worth a fuk, but i find that to be true about most places.
and by the way, i have a rock crawler, so i like it when we get a good snow. its fun to go play in it, and i also make a decent amount of cash from pulling idiots out of ditches.-"Never give up on something you can't go a day without thinking about."

Native NY'er living in the ATL. It's like 2 inches of snow which WOULD be nothing up north but this city doesn't have any salt trucks or plows. They stupidly never invested in it because it only snows and sticks like once every few years. Now all the roads are ice. People have abandoned their cars all over the place. I was on a conference call this morning working from home and it took my boss 11 HOURS to drive home last night.
Glad I left at noon and got home and started drinking.

lack of equipment is only so much of an excuse.
Up here in the mtns, ya we have plows and salt, but costs to run and spread are pretty high, only a couple main streets will get done. It's not like we have a fuking plow army.
We're simply smart enough to know ice reduces surface friction, so slow the hell down when driving, unless you're in a 4wd truck, then its time for some drift busting."There is no one right way, everyone is different"

So if you live in the south and you or your kids are stuck overnight on the roads in freezing conditions once every 10-15 years, that is acceptable because the cost of being prepared may cost too much?
Fine, but then when the "polar vortex" is announced to come three days ago why were people out driving? why were roads left open? why were schools open? If you OPT not to be prepared, you can't gamble that things will go well. Its one or the other. This situation is completely unacceptable.“Israel in the Middle East is fighting on behalf of the free world,” declared Mosab Hassan Yousef, the outspoken son of Hamas leader Hassan Yousef.

No hate on northeners, but remember..
here in Calgary, our city actually relies on Chinooks (yeah, the warm winds from the west) as a part of our snow budget. When we don't get one for a while, and lots of snow (ala this year) we get faurked and horrible road cleaning (again, just like this year).
By all rights, we should have snow days to sometimes in the north. Phuck, those days when it pours wih snow and you hear all the accidents on the radio...terrifyingGT: Conzidine

The weather forecast was way off. It was the same thing in Birmingham, AL. The freezing rain/snow hit earlier and harder than anyone had predicted. Businesses and schools should have never opened on Tuesday at all. I have friends who tried to leave work too late and couldn't even get on the interstate. They were stuck there overnight. They slept on the floor and raided the executive break room for food.
So this disaster was a combination of several things:
1) Nobody in the south knows how to drive in snow and ice. Nobody has chains for their tires. Not as many people have four wheel drive vehicles as you might think.
2) There aren't enough salt trucks/sand spreaders to cover even a fraction of the city. At best all they can do is salt/sand the bridges and with the gridlock they couldn't even do that.
3) The weather forecast was just wrong. It started earlier than expected and was worse than expected.
4) Businesses and schools tried to remain open for at least half a day. By that time it was just too late. Birmingham has a lot of hills and mountains. It was a lost cause by 11AM. If you left work around 9AM you probably made it out OK.And there's a plague of locusts upon us
And there's a nightmare in the swarm
And there's a lion out in the desert

Backstreet's back alright... Alright...

Had work at 10 am today (target) went outside to walk on the road, seemed fine regular pavement. Get out to another road completely iced over. I ride my Trek road bike so the tires are super slick, fall over hit my leg, fuk that call in go home now in bed. **** this ice and **** would rather it be 105 and so humid I sweat as soon as I step outside. at least I can do stuff and get a tan.
