The misc is always about extremes. For example, some brah would claim everything is hard, while another would claim everything is easy. You fall on the former scale.
Everyone knows that it's not a walk in the park to get a job, it requires a lot of effort. However, the way you are saying it, it makes it seem like you will be unemployed for the rest of your life if you don't have a portfolio or haven't made amazing programs, which is completely incorrect.
The truth is, yes your degree does help you, yes your career center should help you a lot (heck, my uni has special counselors if you are an engineering major solely for finding you a job), yes you should be able to get a job with only your university knowledge.
No, we aren't in a recession anymore. If my classmate was able to get a job with a 2.3 gpa and absolutely no outside knowledge of various topics, then many engineering majors could as well.
That's not saying that it's easy though. The misc is too obsessed with extremes to acknowledge this.

The truth is that I do attend a world class university, and have multiple internships under my belt. I don't want to go into specifics as I don't want to be detectived, but if you were really keen you could look at my post history and work out which uni I attend and what sort of work I've done.
And I never said I was making bank. In fact, money isn't my primary driver. Recently I made a thread about turning down a final round interview at an investment bank for a front office position because I realised my heart wasn't in it, and I was just applying for the money/prestige/brandname. Admittedly I have been influenced by my peers given 80%+ of my class go into investment banking, asset management or consultancy (I'm majoring in economics). Finally I'm realising what I'm suited for
