Tyson could have been greatest of all time by far if Cuts D´amato hadn´t died just as he was beginning to gain success (his trainer) and if he had kept his personal life in order. However due to these issues I would say it really depends in which way you define ¨best boxer¨. Based on record, ability, knockouts, important fights? If its a mixture, than maybe Ali.

I don't think Tyson could have been the greatest because at the time he fought, there were hardly any 'great' HWs left compared to the 60s/70s, also, he only had 3-4 title defences compared to Larry Holmes' 20 and Joe Louis' 25. Had Tyson fought in the 70s, I very much doubt he would have beaten guys like Ali, Foreman, Shavers, Frazier, Norton or Holmes (in his prime) I would have loved to have seen it though, in terms of power, I would put Tyson up there with Foreman and Shavers.
As for the best boxer ever, it's really tough for me to decide but I would say it is between Sugar Ray Robinson, Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard. I'd even put Hagler in the all time list but I'm always biased when it comes to Hagler, love watching his old fights."We want to kill something, and they want to give us meat that’s already dead. A real predator don’t want no cooked meat. You keep feeding a damn lion meat out of the refrigerator, it’s gonna lose its predatory instincts." - Ann Wolfe
"Be water, my friend"- Bruce Lee
"Dang" - Rener Gracie

You make a good point, the thing is, as I said, I think it really depends the way you decide greatest. By Tyson having the potential to be the greatest I mean that the combination of his ´peekabo´ style, insane speed and strength, dodging and ring generalship could have made him the greatest in terms of natural boxing ability. However, in terms of the greatest champion, he would´t have had the longevity of those past champions, nor as impressive a record, considering the deterioration of the heavyweight division during his short-lived reign. You´re only as good as your competition allows you to be. Easy opponents + personal issues = lost potential. I also love Tommy Hearns.
