what is a decent gym membership price?

With my new job i am looking for something to do after work and there is a 24 hour fitness right down the street.

I usually work out in my living room but its an apartment and limited on space. i also am training for a marathon and it helps me if I do speedwork on a treadmill vs always outside.

I could work out at the navy gym for free but not at 10 at night so this might be a good option.

On their site its about 36$ per month with a sign up of $72 or something like that. Seems a bit much but nothing I couldnt swing and it might be nice to actually train in a real gym.

    Any thoughts?

There is the old folks gym thats 35 per quarter but their gear and hours and just too limited.

I want to train after work so am not just sitting here getting bored. i am working from hime now as well so i can go all week without ever leaving the apartment.

    If I'm understanding you correctly....

I'd go with the above and schedule your workouts to finish prior to 22:00.
IIRC to get good sleep it may be preferable to have the workout done early in the evening anyway...but...I've been wrong in the past.
The other options don't appeal to me.

I'm certainly no help but those are my 'thoughts'.

    Carry on....

My gym is 24/7...it has some amenities...tanning area (which is extra) and massage therapy (also extra) It's pretty simple other than those two things.
    The monthly membership is $30. I think $36 is a good price. I don't remember if I paid a registration/sign up fee. I probably did...I think that's pretty customary.

One thing that pisses me off about 24 Hour Fitness is that they will run "specials", where if you sign up during the special period (usually a 2 week period) you will get a discounted rate, like maybe $29.99 instead of $36. But I can't find anywhere that they publicize or promote these specials in advance. I've gone twice to sign up, only to be told that I missed the special period and they couldn't tell me when it was going into effect again. They would rather let me walk away than to give me the special rate. And the specials vary from one location to another, even within the same city. At least that's how it is in KC.

Anyway, I've been going to an expensive gym since April at $60/month. It's very nice and huge, has tons of weight equipment, unlimited towel service, nice sauna/steam room/hot tub/showers, toiletry products, indoor & outdoor pools, yoga and other group classes included in the price, etc. etc. I think it's totally worth the price, but it's more pampering than I need, so I'm looking to switch to 24 Hour if I can get the special rate.

so, you'd get a discounted rate...permanently? for the duration of your contract? if so, that's pretty awesome.

Just got back from checking the place out. perfect for my needs. $32 a month no contract. Hardly anyone in the place and this should be their busiest time so its perfect. The guy said its kind of an oddball location so they never get that busy even though its been there for years.

A couple squat racks with no one in them so that was the first thing I noticed. Millions of treadmills he says that you never have to wait for.

he said most guys are arm curlers and dont work legs, deadlift or squat so I am set!!

    Perfect.

most 24 hr places around here are $10-$20 a month. of course they aren't really "quality" gyms LOL (snap fitness & planet fitness"

the local "best fitness" (used to be a member - its pretty nice) is running a special for $14.99 a month if you sign a 2 yr contract or $9.99 a month for life if you pay a $180 initiation fee

but the places that have pools, extra classes, and racketball/basketball courts are usually around $69 a month an up.

I am just a home gymer right now. more convenient for me.

That's pretty good! I never got a 'sign up' pay in advance for a contract sales pitch at Gold's here in Dallas. Just a flat rate per month. My membership is just a little more expensive than yours, around 42 dollars a month. But it's the 'corporate membership.' I can workout in any Gold's gym in the country. One of the best investments I've ever made.

Crup it is my renewal time and i have been doing my research on this topic and the range is 20-70 depending on the gym's amenities and exclusivity. This is in the DC metro area. I bring my own towel so that isn't really a concern for me. If you pay more up front then obviously your monthly drops. it seems like the sweet spot is 35 per month depending on numerous factors. That is what i pay and will continue since a run in 7 degrees today isn't a wise heart option

Thanks everyone for the inout. signed up today and will be in there tomorrow morning.

I asked the guy if it was ok to deadlift and he looked at me like I was stupid for asking. of course its ok, just dont do anything stupid he said. Cool. Then i saw someone deadlifting on my way out so that was comforting.

36$ per month is not bad for San Diego.

Here's a few tips from someone who worked at gyms and gym management for years:

    - Gym in big cities are usually more expensive (staff is paid more there too lol)

    - More expensive gyms are usually the ones which have more fancy extras like sauna, steam room, super nice changing rooms and so on. (My gym in Seattle is 18$ a month, great weight room, crummy changing area - no fluff)

    - There is always a special. Ask "what is your special right now." (If it's not now, there will be a special in a week). Ask "what can you do for me?" Most gym will cut your initiation fees if you push them

    - Don't ask the cute girl at the desk to cut you a deal. She's a minion and has no power. Ask the general manager.

    - The general manager works business hours, never early or late. Never in the week-end. Don't ask for a deal at those times when he is not there.

    - Don't ask for a deal or sign a membership at peak hours. People are busy and dealing with cranky members.

    - Best time to get membership (and ask for a deal) is at around 11:00 am and around 2 pm when the gym is dead and the manager in a good mood.

    - Before you sign, ask for free tryout passes. There is always free tryout passes. If they don't, show up at 6am and tell the cute morning girl you just want to try. She'll probably let you in

Hope that new place works for you

funny you mention this. i went about 130 today and the guy i talked to last night was busy so i dealt with the manager.

He waived the $29 sign up fee and i left with $31 per month with more gym access than I could have gotten last night. I feel good about it. No need for a free pass. i can see what I needed to see.

he did give me some though so i will give them to the old folks across the street from the gym where my mom lives.

Operation blue hair should be in full swing by the middle of next week!! I will make a point of not eating prior to going to so i score some grandma cookies or cake or some other treats!!

In Seoul, prices range from $60-$100 per month… and that's for fairly small gyms.

Gold's gym - $10/mo. Wish they never did that though. Tons of new members and the place is always packed.

I think that's a pretty good deal esp if you are in SD. I lived in the Bay Area and belonged to the 24/7 there for $65 month....moved to a different area where all the local gyms are in the $30 - $50 range so renegotiated my contract and only pay $24 a YEAR....(I had to fork over $700-$900 for 2 - 3 years...can't remember the exact details then after that it was $24 a year....something to think about over the long run if you plan on being in your city for a minute)
