    Any tips on making the hook grip less painful?

    I recently started getting into olympic lifting, and I therefore started doing double overhand hook grip deadlifts. The hook grip hurts, especially as the weights get heavy.

    Any tips on how I can decrease the pain?

    I will try that. If it is just a case of manning up, I will eventually man up.

    Sorry if this is a stupid question, but is there any danger of hurting your thumb from the hook grip?

    No. My thumbs have gone brown like someone that smokes but that's it.

    A couple layers of athletic tape around the thumb helps a bit, but you kind of just have to get used to it

    Probably not the smartest way to do it, but how I did it was deadlifting 405 for AMAP which I think was like 11 or 12 back then. It hurt like hell, but they have never hurt since

    I got up to 1 rep of 365 today with a double hook grip.

    Maybe I will do AMAP with 315 next time.

    If it continues to hurt and gets worse, then hold off on it for at least 1-2 weeks, but you can go back to it after it the pain has gone and it should get better and your hands should start getting used to it by then.

    Matt4242 already said it but athletic tape around the areas giving you problems. It's saved my thumbs so far. Also yes it takes time to get used to it.
