So I'm currently starting a cut, somewhere around 20 pounds probably (first cut, so we'll see). I'm definitely a beginner. My 1RMs for the program (1RM*.9) would be Press (95) DL (255) Bench (170) Squat (220). My question to you guys: is 5/3/1 an appropriate program for me on a cut? If so should I go ahead and do the beginner template, or would I be better off with one of the others (I was looking at Simplest Strength)? I was thinking I should do one of the other ones besides the 3x/week templates if for no other reason because if I was going 4x/week it would help my metabolism w/ cutting. As I said though, I'm definitely a beginner so any experienced advice would be great!

Jim does a lot of chit to sell more books...The 5/3/1 beginner uses the same 5/3/1 intermediate progression. You'd be much better off doing SS for 4 months and getting you lifts up then going to 5/3/1 BBB after that...but what do I know...oh wait, that's what I did and my squat went from 145 to 275 on SS and 275 to 335 on 5/3/1 and 19'' quads to 23'' quads.
But hey...do whatever you want. Good look getting gainz of any kind doing 110 4x10 squats
Look at it this way OP you can either spent 12 cycles adding 120 lbs to your squat training max taking it from 220 to 340...or you can do stronglifts/Starting Strength and add that weight in about 4 months to your squat.Last edited by Jasonk282; 01-04-2014 at 05:24 PM.

That's what I'm wondering. I'm 5'9 and my goal weight is around 170-180. My lbm is 168. We need a pic to verify whether you actually need a cut? By the sounds of things you might just need to bulk to fill yourself out. You might be skinny fat.
On the subject of programs. 5/3/1 you make progression once a month. Since you are a beginner you should be looking for a program that makes progression workout to workout. You recover MUCH MUCH faster than someone who is an intermediate. I would recommend any 5x5 that you like the best and will stick with for 6 months. By that time if you can't progress every workout you then go to weekly. Once you can't make progression weekly THEN you should do 5/3/1. By that time you will probably be rocking 350+ squats, 400+ deadlifts, and around 225+lb benches.
The only thing I don't like about All Pro's is that it's progression is monthly with higher reps weekly. IMO you should be upping reps or weights each workout, not weekly.Last edited by DoubleDCountry; 01-04-2014 at 05:00 PM.
