I see quite a few threads here and there about depression, and I would like to create a thread where people can come and vent their feelings and seek support. Depression is no joke, and getting support is a very important part of the healing process.
Depression is a serious illness that affects many, all I ask is that if you have nothing positive to say then please refrain from posting. WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER!

I was depressed for a long time before I got help. Got on the right meds and now life kicks ass. Also getting out and doing things (anything) really helps - isolation fosters depression, and even going across the street to get a cup of coffee can make a huge difference if you are sitting at home dwelling in your own thoughts.
EDIT: A little about me: I was a happy kid all my life until high after high school. I became very pessimistic about life. I quit several sports and activities I used to like doing because I would rather sit at home. I had a lot of anxiety about meeting new people. I quit several jobs because because I had zero confidence in myself. There was no event or traumatic incident that caused it. I believe it was hereditary, my whole dad's side of the family suffers. I started taking medication and was on and off it for a while. Once I started taking it consistently I noticed a change. It was subtle but made all the difference. I currently have a very high stress job and love it. I still have trouble sometimes with new situations or meeting new people but I am able to work it out.
If you are feeling depressed it only has to be temporary. Seek help and I guarantee you can work it out and you will feel better before you know it.Last edited by run_lola_run; 12-27-2013 at 10:42 PM.

it feels like any time i do something that im not even doing it. if that even makes sense. like the feeling and the numbness wont go away. its like im just trying to do things in order to avoid whats there.
just feels like im trapped. no matter what i do it never quite leaves. for example, yesterday i went to play basketball with a bunch of buddies of mine from HS. afterwards we went out to eat. the whole time i was with them i couldnt truly enjoy myself. it was like i was never truly with them. present in the moment. it sucks brah.
ive tried self diagnosing myself for months. for a while i was pretty obsessed over depersonalization. but those thoughts havent even crossed my mind for a good while. now its just been the feeling of grey, dull, numbness. being trapped.

Nice idea, OP. Its unfortunate, but the holiday season can sometimes bring an increase in suicide rates. I work as a police officer and sadly worked a suicide on Christmas day.
Its important to watch for the signs of depression in both ourselves and others. They often go unnoticed until its too late."The wise know too well their weakness to assume infallibility; he who knows most, knows best how little he knows."

Very good point. I admire you for your strength to do the job you do, because I know that being a police officer can entail working with suicides and that has to be really tough. You are correct, and I think this thread should be a safe place for people to be able to look for support and vent. Having support is huge in being able to cope with depression.
