Woukd men's physique be better for a amatuer?

    Hi all,
I would really like some advice on competing in mens physique some point next year, I'm currently at 186 lb and 12% bodyfat, and been lifting for 2 years and only recently got serious about my diet and lifting, so in a nutshell would mens physique be good for a amatuer?looking to get to 177 lb and 7% bodyfat, any tips would be appreciated.

My guess is that it may be a good idea to start out in a physique show. If however your goal is to become a bodybuilder then i would spend a couple more years training your ass off and then enter into a bodybuilding show. Personally, i do not want to enter into a BB show and would rather perform in a physique show so it all depends upon what your goals are. My 2 cents.

A physique contest would be good to get your feet wet for sure. Alot more work goes into a bodybuilding show than a physique show. That would be a good start. For bodybuilding your weight and body fat would come down very low. Lower than you think and alot of posing practice would be required. Start with mens physique.

    Hope that helps

Completely agree here. Bodybuilding is the extreme of the sport. Whereas physique is all about aesthetics and conditioning, which does still require a great deal of work and dedication, bodybuilding takes those standards to an extreme. There is a HUGE difference in 6-7%bf and 3-5%bf, trust me there. I would say get your feet wet with physique, and see how it goes, and where you want to progress from there!

I'm in the same boat. I am entering a very large amateur contest April 25, 2014, I want to compete in bodybuilding, but I think a physique contest would be an outstanding way to see what the stage is like, and the scene in general since I've never competed before.
Time is the other thing. You need lots of time to pack mass on your frame then cut down to really show it off. In a way, you can prepare yourself for both physique and bodybuilding at the same time. I say go for it.

Thanks for the responses, ideally I'd prefer to be a physique competitor as it's not just about mass and ultra low body fat, and I'd prefer to stay in the single bodyfat digits or at 10% like a lot do instead of the bodybuilding percentages of 3% to 15+
