without sounding to much of an armchair critique as i have never competed myself, why is he competing now? Props for him for doing it but wouldnt it be better to lean bulk for a few more years instead of going on long slows cut , in the long run putting on more muscle. I get its good experience but i would rather go on stage once i have a very solid foundation around 220 6% and focus on putting on the mass first than competing in weight classes no one cares about and not building muscle for atleast 12 weeks each year. I get the experience may be good to, and he will learn conditioning lessons, but if it was me i would wait a few more years say when hes 22 and has a solid base off mass he is lacking at the moment.

If it were you and you waited till you were 22 to get on stage, you'd make a fool of yourself.
I've done 4 shows, and every time, I learn something I should have done better on stage. If you wait till your older, your posing is going to suck, your presentation is going to suck. You don't know how to do it all because you didn't start when you were young.
And he'll probably place 1st honestly. Who doesn't want to be able to say they took 1st in a bodybuilding show? Freakin legit. It puts him on a whole other level than other people because anyone(like you) can just say "oh I'll compete when I'm older" then they never do. Why wait? Why do tomorrow what you can do today?
I started competing at 17 and I'm very glad I did. I believe it helped me win my last NPC show because of how I presented myself and how well I knew the poses compared to everyone else who was competing for their first time. The 2 most important things to me when training are 1. The Muscle Mind Connection. and 2. Intensity

Hardly make a fool of yourself the dude who won my states amateur overall had never competed in his life aged 24 he cut from 262 to 219 and beat guys who had done 10 plus shows. Im just saying i would rather get a solid amount of mass and make that my focus before competing because i really dont care for a 10 dollar trophy nor bragging to people. But i do see your point about experience helping and i defiantly believe this would be an advantage. Oh well good luck with it what weight do you think he will come in dry at?
