Pretty much
Work is so slow that we're allowed to browse our phones, play video games and do crossword puzzles. The machines run themselves and yet we get paid this much because people don't want to relocate for the jobs. Living the dream.
Lulz at all you people with four year degrees who work as cubicle slaves for a third of my income. How's the rat race to make the rich people even richer?

It's almost impossible as a non-citizen. The only Americans in the Canadian Oil Sands are Engineers. We don't really recognize foreign trade or technician papers.
You could hypothetically come up here on a student visa and do a diploma in Power Engineering and then appealing to all the companies to take you in on a work visa.

The barrier is steam time. Almost impossible to get unless you do a diploma or a steam lab but both are a years' waiting list to get in. But that's Canada - there's also a waiting list of one year for all the pre-apprenticeships. In contrast - there's no waiting list for engineering or computer science and some engineering programs will accept anyone (51% in math).

A chance that you will never receive let alone get the recognition you deserve.
Blue collars dominate the money making industries with the exception to the 1% of investment bankers who watch American psycho, those studying medicine or becoming engineers.

Yeah everyone thinks they will end up as a partner but that's not the real world. I know scores of accountants, lawyers and engineers and I bet they all thought, in their 20s, they would be rich someday but that didn't work out for them.
Blue collar in Canada is a safer bet than the roulette that white collar work is. There's a chance you might be a rich white collar but there's also a chance you might win the lottery.

With the exception of Petroleum Engineers - Engineers don't make any money unless they make firm partner (which only 0.5% of graduates will ever make). There's a reason why most engineering graduates give up and work in finance with their degrees.
The reality in Canada is that most Tradesmen and Technicians are better off then their white collar counterparts. There are white collars do well and make bags of money but in theory that also happens to tradesmen who start their own business. The wealthiest guy I know is a Glazier who employs 30 workers.

You do realize that you are within the upper echelons of your particular industry and most
'blue collar' work in regards to earnings. And to remit what I said earlier and also what you are saying now by using the terms blue collar vs white collar. To say outright that one dominates the other would be incorrect. and investment
banking, medicine, and engineering are not the only disciplines that can compete with blue collar
work. every industry or profession has its outliers (you being one in yours and compared with most US
blue collar work) also strong unawareness of the earnings potential and likelihood of
attainment of some 'white collar' professionsLast edited by Jwock; 12-12-2013 at 02:28 PM.

Dude. For people to make those incomes you're talking about - they're usually older than 30 / 35 and by then they're years in income (and student debt) behind the blue collar types.
We have people here in Canada who are making $200K in the Alberta Oil Patch at age 21. Tell me *******, TELL ME *******, how many white collars make more than $200K? Await your response.
All you ****g0ts on misc think you'll be firm partners or millionaire doctors - not the real world brah.
You'll going to end up as depressed middle class professionals who only make $90K (maybe $120K tops) with 4 kids and a 20+ year mortgage. Enjoy your life suckers.

I went to college for math and taught myself how to code for fun. I did intern at a firm doing analytics for pharma. I returned to that job after graduating with a $70k ($80k with bonus) offer out of college. I left after a year a joined a new company starting at $90k. I got a raise last July that pushed me to $100k.
