That feel when a company calls you and leaves a voice mail wanting to conduct an interview. But the thing is this job is literally in another state. I have no idea how they even got my resume but they seem inclined to interview me asap. I've never even thought about moving to a different city. Let's say I land they job and they like me.

SHould I move to a different city?

What are your experiences and pros/cons about moving to a complete different city?

For me, I went from what was, IMO, the best state (beach state) to literally one of my top 5 DO NOT WANT states (a midwest state). It wasn't easy, but I figured I was just starting my career, the pay was quite good, the position was basically exactly what I was looking for (R&D), and so I'd do it for 3-5 years and then either move back to my favorite state or another one I would like as well.

Without giving specifics for my case (because it depends on what you like/value and what state you would be leaving and what state you would be moving to):

    Pros:

    1) Learn a new city/state
    2) Meet new people
    3) Another level of growing up (you have no support system directly in the area- friends/family are away so you have to figure things out rather than relying on others to do it for you)
    4) Potential to fall in love with a new place (definitely NOT in my case)

    Cons:

    1) Could hate the state/people (my case)
    2) No support system (everybody you know is not there)
    3) Can be lonelier (until you start to make friends)

I mean it's so dependent on you as an individual that it's hard to answer these types of questions. To me, it basically just comes down to do you want to or not?

I thought I would gain something in terms of my career and money, so I thought the sacrifice for a few years was worth it. It was basically everything I was looking for in terms of an offer and I don't think think it was a bad choice, just the state was the real killer for me. I also am not really one for regrets. I make my choice and live with it. If I don't like my current situation, I just look at how I can change it- not lament on my "poor" decision.

So the only person who can answer, "Should I?" is you. Do you like this state? Have you been to it? Are you open/want to experience new things/new people? How career focused are you? What do you want to do in your career and does this job help you do that?

Pros - Chance to see new things/meet new people

Cons- I am not really outgoing and am somewhat introverted so it can be difficult making new good friends that I feel comfortable hanging around with regularly quickly.

My first job - absolutely hate the city (****hole 10k population west texas oil and gas town)
Looking at potentially interviewing for a job in Oklahoma within the next week or two that I think I would like more but it's probably still 6+ hours from any family

Unfortunately the right jobs and doors haven't opened up for me yet to work where I want to. As of right now I'm currently looking at every potential job as a stepping stone to gain new skills until I can finally work my way back to Austin/Houston.

On the other hand there's my dad who moved to Austin years ago, 13+ hours from any family and a nice beach city in Florida and hasn't looked back since.

Other kids I graduated with went out to Bakersfield, Cali and have no plans of coming back to Texas so it completely depends on how you feel about the job/opportunities there and the city.

Had a lunch with a VP at a company I would love to work for in Houston but he said the hiring process may take until April, if this other interview in Oklahoma goes through next week then that puts me in a tough spot if I were to receive an offer where I'd probably be moving to OK despite being potentially close to finally getting Houston due to the multiple interview timelines not working out.

    Tulsa or OKC?

dd45778: As long as its a somewhat reasonable city (no bumfuk middle of nowhere) then definitely consider it. Look at it as an opportunity to get out of you comfort zone a little bit. I've lived in 5 different cities between internships and full time jobs and I've got good memories from each one (even if they weren't the most awesome places). Life is an adventure, don't let a little moving scare you... its not like you're stuck there for life anyway.

I agree. I'm going to call the guy back Monday morning and let him know I'm interested. If the Salary is good and they can give me a big signing bonus ofr moving and helping me move I should do it. It's not in the middle of nowhere but a decent city up North. But it will also depend on what I will be doing and the salary. I already have a 60k job offer and I also have the career fair coming up. By spring break hopefully I can have a decent 6-8 job offers that I can choose from.

Hi..how long did it take ME's to get their degree? I dropped out recently but am gonna apply again..possibly..anyway does it take 5 years on average?

I think EE and CS is better degree now because you learn coding and programming/computer hardware..

    What do you guy feel?

I would consider living in either Tulsa or Stillwater based on the daily commute I would have and other factors. Probably leaning Stillwater right now but it's still super early in the process and I've never been to Stillwater. Would be working in the pipeline crossroad of the world.

Kind of feel like our company is over staffed now that we sold off all of our deep producing wells and acreage and it's only a matter of time before people start being let go.

If I could do it all over again and was entering into college this year I probably would do EE/CE/CS. Endless possibilities IMO, my dad is an EE and has always had great and stable opportunities. I personally never liked circuits and stuff, but I really enjoyed the challenge of our Matlab programming course as part of the ME curriculum. As a mechanical it took me 4 years to graduate but I know many kids that took 5. While I say that it took me 4 years I took community college english and history the summer before my freshman year in college, another set of history/political science the next two summers and one other class at a community college during a winter minimester. If I could go back and do that again I would have taken 5 years and used one of those summers for an internship.

Idk if you have ever been to OK/Tulsa, but as far as OK goes, it's probably about as good as it's going to get. It's a relatively big city, so there is a decent amount of stuff. The drivers are ****ing terrible (seriously, only place I have been to where I immediately noticed the drop in driver quality). The weather blows (literally and figuratively) all year round. This winter isn't bad actually, but the last two were ****ing awful- November through April with a snow just about every month. Grey every ****ing day and cold as ****. Absolutely miserable. Since there are no mountains or anything like CO it's not like you can enjoy the snow by going skiing. It's just a pain in the ass. And the snow isn't really that bad- it's the ice. Also, since it's so dry, my nose/hands crack and bleed. Literally, they just crack and bleed- have to use healing hand lotion and a humidifier, lol. Then winter is over, but what's that? Yeah, ****ing tornado season (absolutely blows my mind people would want to live in OKC, more specifically Moore/Norman- complete retards). Then summer comes and it's not too bad tbh. It gets hot, but it's a dry heat, so not bad. But then again, like the snow, it's like the heat does nothing for you (no boating or beaches to enjoy the heat in aside from poverty lakes that aren't particularly close). Fall is nice and this year it actually lasted a decent amount of time (the last two years it was barely a month). IME, I've found half the people are really nice and the other are complete douchebags. Not much southern hospitality to be found generally.

On the day-to-day grind (work, gym, home) I don't mind it too much aside from all the awful weather, but come the weekend, I definitely wished I did not live here. I miss my home state every day (it's just what I like- beaches, boating, nice weather basically all year, diverse culture), but that's just me. I was actually relieved at how Tulsa is when I moved up here. I came up through southern OK and was like plz don't let Tulsa look like this, haha. If I had to live just about anywhere else in OK, I don't think I would still be here. I'd still like to move in a few years, but it's tolerable for now.

If you are more of an isolationist or just want a big piece of land, you can get those in the Tulsa metro area. So that's definitely a plus for people who are looking for that. It's also really cheap. So you can have your big piece of land and if you want to go in to the city for a night out or do some shopping, whatever, it is pretty convenient as traffic is typically not bad (some areas are currently because they are doing massive amounts of construction, but even then, it's only during peak traffic hours). It's certainly not like Houston as far as traffic goes or how big Houston is geographically, lol. I can go from one end of Tulsa to the other in like 15-20 minutes tops (unless terrible traffic for some reason). But from the time I have spent in Houston, really aside from the sports teams and better weather, there's not really much difference (granted, I never lived in Houston so my exposure is obviously more limited, but I have spent quite a bit of time there), IMO.

That's just my take on it. Most people that I talk to here just don't seem to really think about it. At my job, I'm the only non-native Okee in engineering and most of the company. People here seem to just live here and not give it much thought about living anywhere else.

Good luck with whatever decision you make.

Agreed, plz drop office, lol. It's like anybody who went through just about any college degree should be, lol.

For skills, think of programming languages, simulation software, modeling software, foreign languages, and other software (engineering related- so not office, lol).

idk how I feel about that, IMO Id say 1 in 3 students can format a GREAT report with MS word. Not only will it make it nicer, but it also cuts down the time required to do so if you know the right tips and tricks, and dont let me get started on using Excel(which can basically almost do everything MATLAB can).. So id say put it on there if you have room, if not sure leave it out.

^^ took me 5 years to get a degree in ME... and pretty much everyone else I know took 5 years too. I can count on 1 hand those who took 4 years while working and they were literally the top 1 or 2 students in the class.. working a 20 hour work week internship and still getting straight A's. Then there are the few who took 6 or even 7 years lol.

I've lived in Tulsa for 3 months before, thought it was alright and fine weather wise, it wasn't during the winter though.

The thing is there really aren't too many opportunities right now that I'm being called back for (probably have over 50 applications out). Obviously I would love this role in Houston that I met with a VP about but if that interview and offer even does ever come it could be a month or two after the process wraps up for the Oklahoma position, just a tough spot to be in.

Need some opinions on a resume situation. I'm thinking about going to my school's career fair this month but my resume is not up to par. First, of all I'm a transfer student from a community college. My first semester at Uni was fall 2015. I only took 6 hours of credit at the University and unfortunately made 2 C's and my gpa is now 2.0. My CC gpa was 3.7.

Should I include the University Gpa on the my resume or just the community college one?

Another situation: I also got the chance to do an "internship" at my community college. Unfortunately I had to cut it short at about 5 weeks instead of the full 10 week program because of Course transfer issues between my community college and University. I had to take summer classes instead.

Should I include this internship experience on my resume even though I quit early?

I'm just really anxious and down right feeling defeated and I haven't even applied to any companies yet. There's people in my classes getting internships already. (I'm a ME sophomore) I'm here in Houston so my schools career fair has a bunch of companies coming, but the competition is just crazy man.

Sorry for the partial dear diary post guys. I just need some advice. Thanks brahs. Good luck on your job/internship searches!

If you want or need to include GPA on resume I would include your previous GPA, not sure how you'd phrase it? Maybe Transfer GPA? If not you could maybe just leave off GPA altogether and if asked you could say you're a transfer student and haven't taken enough hours to reflect a valid GPA at your new school.

I have a six week internship listed on my resume, is there a reason why you think they'd question it? On mine I have like Engineering Intern 3/13 - 5/13. I have never once been asked about the length of it.

If I could go back and do that again I would have taken 5 years and used one of those summers for an internship.
ah ok..yeh I was studying something similiar to Mech and indusrial .dropped out cus im a retard lolz..

I just have another question, id I do master in aerospace after ME what is the likelyhood of a stable job? is it too specialised industry? thx

Job prospects etc really depend on where you live. For example in Aus, there is a massive down turn in engineers at the moment, where the largest job website has maybe 10 jobs a day for an EE posted country wide. CS or IT in comparison have like 100+ country wide, earning relatively good money for city based work. CS degrees also have an awesome job prospects outlook going into the future and you can work in so many related fields it is amazing.

For you guys thinking about doing engineering in general, have a good look at job websites and see how often jobs are posted. As soon as there is a decline in industry and construction, engineers are among the first to lose their jobs. At the end of the day we go to uni to get a job, never forget that.

I might just do the transfer GPA thing. I really dont think a 2.0 with 6 hours taken reflects my academic ability.

On the internship front I'm kinda worried. It would be listed as "Internship" (June 2015-July 2015). That looks a bit short doesnt it? Hopefully it turns out ok.

Dat feel when you can barely find any good summer internships in NYC. Tried using engieeringjobs and indeed but I can't really find anything that I'm looking for. Maybe its too early and most of them weren't posted?

Wat do brahs, I really need an internship this summer.

    Mechanical Engineering btw.

Why are you limiting your search to NYC? It'll only be 3 months in a different area. If you dislike the area a lot you will be back to NYC soon with hopefully valuable experience that you can leverage towards a job in NYC.

I wouldn't mind working outside of NYC but I don't know if I'd be able to afford it.
Do internships usually pay for relocations?

My internship came with a living stipend/corporate housing option.

Others I know basically had the same thing or their salaries were enough to cover the living costs.

I'll start looking for ones in other states then.

Did you find yours from a website like engineeringjobs/indeed/usajobs, career fair at your college, or a recommendation from someone?

Any advice on the best place to look for one?

I don't know what skills you have. If you can't think of it by now then it probably isn't a skill anyway. It's not a contest to see how much BS you can cram at the bottom of your resume.

Fck brahs, I'm stressing out over the upcoming career fair. I feel like I'm not even qualified enough to go there. I'm only a sophomore, so I'll probably be competing with upper-level classmen.

Go there. You'll get experience and learn how to talk to them.

Your expectations should be to learn and network with companies, not necessarily to get an internship. I wish I went to more career fairs just to network.
