Does alcohol actually hinder gains/weight loss?

I keep reading that drinking alcohol will make you gain weight, or hinder your progress, etc, but isn't it more about calories in vs. calories out as opposed to drinking a specific thing? If you drink in moderation/to fit your macros or calories wouldn't it be fine?

Calories in vs. out determines weight change.

If you drink alcohol in moderation/fit your macro's, yes it will be fine.

Alcohol can indirectly hinder your gains though, for example reduced performance in the gym while hungover.

not just indirectly, it can directly hinder gains by retarding protein synthesis, inhibiting recovery, altering hormones. but again having 1-2 beers wont cause much harm

I don't know whether to listen to Jason anymore of not...

He's generally right, but encourages corrections in his statements. Good stuff IMO.
