    Periodisation?

I've been looking into leaning more about periodization rather than just having base knowledge on the topic and after doing a bit of research, seem to get very mixed results in terms of book recommendations.

Basically, my question is. What are the best or THE best books for learning about periodization as a whole topic.

Thanks in advance for any info.

I've seen the spelling in two different ways, but I've clearly offended you so accept my humble apologies.

periodization is simply manipulating training variables to reduce chance of overtraining to avoid plateaus. Most of the books you find on periodization will probably be focused on training for a team sport or for olympic lifting. periodization is usually broken down into macrocycles (long term), mesocycles (months), or microcycles (week to week). The idea behind most periodization programs is to have a focus for each mesocycle or phase. For example your first mesocycle may be a month or two focused on hypertrophy followed by a strength or power phase. Followed by a peak strength phase and ended with a competition phase and a taper. Periodization allows for a peaking phase at the end of the macrocycle with the goal being to prepare the body to optimally perform in a competition of some sort. Not sure if this is what you were looking for. Im not sure of any books off the top of my head but if you were to go on amazon or google and search Im sure there are a lot of books that would interest you.

    This is pretty on point.
For non athletes, periodization is great for goal setting (strength gains, weight loss, etc) and preventing injury. And remember that randomization is not periodization. It is planned very specifically like said above.

This helps a lot thanks, its pretty much what I had in mind too. Had seen a few books that were highly rated but wasnt sure if there was a few 'go to' books for trainers. Really appreciate the precise and helpful reply.

Yes, this is what I wanted to move away from as so many people choose randomness rather than plan their own programs and somehow view it as the same.

Haha thats cool man, no offence taken of course.

Found a few very interested books on the topics and picked up Periodization by Tudor Bompa so hoping that its a good read and i'll learn more from it.

Have been planning out my own stuff for a while now so I have an idea round the topic but just looking to find more info on it really.

Appreciate the feedback so far though.

That book is absolutely amazing. My strength and conditioning coach let me borrow it for a few days. I read the first chapter and had my mind blown. I'm still waiting for funds to come my way so I can buy it myself lol

Yep, the one by Tudor Bopma and Gregory Haff (5th edition I believe) is the one to go for. Amazing book, with a considerable amount of info on all topics that relate to periodization. I actually had Haff lecture us on the subject in a strength and conditioning course - the guy blew my mind with his knowledge, so following it up with the book, seemed the logical next step to really get my head around the subject.

Yeah, when you are dealing with folk that are literally writing the book on subjects, it's pretty easy to get blown away and pretty humbled.. But also great in realising how much awesome and informative in depth info there is out there. I can say, that book is pretty much the Bible for periodization - so when you get around to reading it, it really will help your arsenal of information..

And enjoy the New Years celebrations bud - hope its a great year for all!
