So I went into the gym the other day and decided to give cleans a go. I haven't done them in several years, and I've never trained weightlifting anyway, so I thought you guys might get a kick out of my terrible technique.
I think I'm going to go to a Crossfit gym on their open day and give 150-160 kgs a go. Tips? I do watch a bit of Oly lifting, so I have some things in mind, but I'm interested to hear what you guys have to say.

Thanks. Yeah, the belt may have gotten in the way more than anything--at least as far as getting into the correct position before the pull.
I'd attribute my clean power to my front squats. I've hit 184 kgs on front squats in just a belt, and 205 kgs with some light wraps, so as long as I can get under the bar, I should be able to recover.
To be honest I'd like to get good at cleans. It'd be really cool to clean 400 lbs (181.5 kgs) some day.637/390tng/615 - belt/wraps, best gym lifts.

I don't really have too much to say, other than Excellent Job!!! With a bit of regular practice, you'll easily hit 160kg+. Only critique I would have is to lose the PL belt. It's too thick, that's why it got in the way. Keep upper back a bit tighter, arch/flatten your back a little more. Finish the extension, you cut the pull a tad short. However, that's all getting pretty picky, and for a guy who's very new to the lifts, great lift!!

OP you are SERIOUSLY strong man! Good chit. although i'd recommend just cleaning 135-225 lb for quite a while man.. while your strength is impressive, I believe mastering you form is really important if you want to keep doing cleans without seriously hurting yourself bud. they were a little rough. but 10x stronger than me at any rate, lookin forward to see your cleans in the future

Thanks guys. I've front squatted 186 kgs pretty easily in just a belt. I am going to work on technique for a while and maybe jerks and snatches now that I have a place to train those lifts. I've always admired oly lifters a lot.

Very strong and looks good for someone with no experience! Your speed diving under the bar is pretty good too. Becareful with your wrists. I see that you jammed your wrists into your knees a couple of times and that can easily sprain/break your wrists. Keep your chest and elbows up. Also, your hips are shooting up too fast coming off the floor. Keep them lower as the bar comes off the ground.

I haven't gone that heavy since... just going light and learning jerks right now (worked up to a 125 kg CJ), then maybe on to snatches.
Honestly, I'm surprised I didn't get a lot more negativity posting in this subforum, since you guys actually know what you are doing technique-wise. I wouldn't take nicely to someone doing the powerlifts with ridiculously bad form.
Perhaps this thread should encourage WLers to focus on front squat... I worked up to a 193 kg front squat without wraps the next week. Basically, it's kind of hard NOT to clean 150 if you can front squat almost 200. I actually was inspired to work on my front squat after seeing lifters like Miika Antti-Roiko (who are, like US lifters, subject to very strict drug testing) train their front squats with high volume and frequency. I've never been able to do that with back squat without overtraining, and I figured maybe front squats would let me get that leg work in for PLing without overtraining. Since I'm a lifetime drugfree lifter, I try to model my training after people who are probably drugfree as well.
I was also able to hit 273 kgs x 3 on back squat (with wraps and belt) last week, and I haven't been back squatting much at all.
Basically, my point is that PLers probably need to be front squatting a lot more than they think--thanks WLing community!
