    all nighters (studying), good or bad?

    I have an exam tomorrow, and i probably have 50% of the material down.

    I could stay up, and probably learn it all, or I was thinking of going to sleep for 4-5 hours and try to get up and study.

    from experience, what do you guys think works best?

    Do it now, dont get up and study(unless this is a test in the afternoon, which then I say get up and study). I can never get myself up in time to actually focus on what im doing, im not a morning person.

    yeah i'm kinda afraid of that. Im pretty sure i would just sleep till the class.

    my exam is at 11am

    man the crash from all nighters is absolutely terrible though

    I get up early (4-5am) to cram sometimes as well. It works if you have a substantial amount of the material down beforehand so that you can reinforce it in the morning. The four hours of sleep will get to you, but probably not until after you've finished the exam. Try chewing gum both during your studying and the actual test-taking.

    Definitely don't pull an all-nighter though...memory retention is ****ty after those.

    Personally, I'm not a morning person at all, so if I try to wake up and study in the morning before the test, I can't do it. I have to pull an all-nighter or I won't study at all.

    I've pulled all nighters many times before exams and never really suffered from it. A lot better than feeling rested but only knowing 50% of the material.

    sleep and memory

    1. if you are going to get less than 4 hours of sleep, its better to stay up.
    2. if your test is before noon thats a good thing (relatively), memory really starts to fall off after about 30 hours of wakefulness
    3. caffeine does help memory, so does nicotine (nicorette can help in a pinch)

    You're right in essence, but the body is a remarkable instrument, and can adapt to a variety of unusual situations. But it's nothing I'd want to do on a regular basis.

    That said, it can be done. But all nighters just verify the fact that you procrastinated, and weren't prepared. I did a lot better when I kept up, and did my assignments when they were due.

    One more thing, it's also a who lot less stressful

    yeah man. in the morning around 8 when i go to class i am real energized.

    around 4pm i start to crash usually. and its bad. real bad.

    my advice is to get extremley sick before your exam and go in half asleep. i did this for two mid-terms this quarter, couldnt remember what i wrote on either test (waaaayyyyyy to much nyquil) assumed i failed. First test i got 100% and the second i got a 93%. The class average for both was around 72%. craziest damn thing that has ever happened to me. I didn't study at all nor was i fully counscious. i laughed all day when i got the tests back. don't know how the hell it happened, but it works. good luck.

    "STRESS" Only thing I can tell you now, if you start to feel uncomfortable on the back of your neck leading to your traps... call it night, or at least stretch and relax for a few minutes until the pain goes away.
