If you dont want to make one, I would advise a mass gainer with high calories that the serving size can be cut in half.
For example - Top Secret Nutrition Weight Gainer 1400 serving size is 2 scoops at 1400 calories. Make it 1 scoop and double your servings per container at 700 calories a scoop.....
Muscletech MassTech is the same way.
So is Dymatize Mega Gainer.Blessed be the Lord, my rock, who trains my hands for war and my fingers for battle...." - Psalms 144:1

If you're on the go, hard gaining, and looking for something that is quick + easy to carry: pop-tarts. A two pack is 380-400 calories! The cheaper mass gainers taste pretty awful and are just as bad for you as straight up chocolate syrup, you will much more enjoy a protein shake(made with whole milk) + a high cal snack. I know I would at least.

compared to making your own... or eating whole foods I'm not sure it's cheaper but def more convenient...I really like mass peak, real gains, true mass, or hard mass gainer.

Homemade Gainer Shake and Price Breakdown
Recipe:
-2 scoops Ultramyosyn Whey ($0.62 a scoop) http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/met/whey.html
-1/2-2 cup Oats
-Banana
-Peanut Butter
-Milk
^Blend and drink twice a day. You WILL gain weight.
Price Breakdown:
18oz Peanut Butter= $2.00
Milk=$2.50
42oz Oats=$3.00
75 scoops Ultramyosyn Whey Protein=$45
Banana=$0.30/Lb
Lets say 4 banana's to a pound. So for a month, you'll need 8lbs of bananas. That's $2.40
Let's say a gallon last you a week. You'll need 4 gallons. That's $10
So the food=$20 + Protein($45) = $65/month for mass gainer shakes.The 2 most important things to me when training are 1. The Muscle Mind Connection. and 2. Intensity

Make your own. It's a lot cheaper. If you need it on the go, get:
- Protein powder
- Powdered oats. Costco has the huge box of Quaker oat for a few bucks. Use your blender to make powder.
- Peanut butter powder. You can get it from Amazon.
Costco also has a big tub of Nesquik or Swiss Miss for a few bucks.
