this is true but just to be clear SS or any similar programs do not claim to add heaps of muscle to your frame or claim to be optimal for anything other than strength gain and athletic ability. It is called Starting STRENGTH for a reason. If you never trained in your life you could put on a decent amount of muscle here and there as you progress but you can't expect to use this program as a means of weight loss or absolute hypertrophy. Why this continues to go misunderstood blows my mind.

It wasnt the routine it was his diet. He could have easily gained muscle and strength and lost fat on a slight calorie deficit for at least the first 6 months, but he didnt know what he was doing. I have been in the same situation, he seems to have learned his lesson though.

Lol at these ss callout threads.
"I got much stronger on starting strength; after my first year of training I could deadlift 400 lbs for a max compared to a measly 105 lbs that I was lifting for 5 reps in the beginning"
Hmmm almost looks like the novice strength program did what it was meant to do. Hmmm.
Also not the programs fault if you eat like chit.https://bandcamp.com/singularity7 - Music collection. Recommend albums. Always looking for more.

ITT we live in an imaginary world where sets of 5 don't build muscle. While in this world we use people who are retarded and have no idea what they're doing as examples to bash things we don't like and people who ride bicycles as examples to nuthug things we do like.

I love how so many people (including in this thread) bash SS yet have obviously never even read the book.... you *******s who read a 5 line copy of the routine are entirely missing the point.
Exactly the same thing happens with 5/3/1, every time i read a past where someone cries about how it does nothing for size i just laugh.... but who was multiple pages on assistance exercises?**#3 always delivers crew**

This is bull****, if u are consistent you would make better results than he got by just doing pressups 3 times a week and cleaning up diet. What I'm saying is it's either bull**** or the guy does what most people do and don't commit, misses loads of training sessions and trains like a ***got OP

not sure why SS constantly gets bashed and hated on when some fuker fuks up.
brb he got fat because he did SS
u wot m8?
Ran stronglifts 5x5 for 30 weeks (2 cycles, about 4 months between them)
Lifts-
Squat: 350lb
Bench - 200lb
Dead - 400lb
Not bad for my age/stats and training for a year. I loved stronglifts, taught me how to execute the big three with good form, seeing as how I'd be doing them so regularly. Especially squatting 3x a week.
But hey this is the misc, one kid fuks up a routine and let's just blame the routine for fuking him up. Obviously wasn't the kids fault right. must be the routine. smh."Gotta do what you gotta do in order to be successful"

'Mirin his transformation now but to blame the initial flub on SS is pretty silly. Pretty common sense if you are built like a flabby woman you shouldnt blow by your maintenance calories by 2000. I used SS in college and had great results in the strength and size departments. You shouldn't use it forever but its simple which is important for beginners. Also anyone who was around the forums in 06-08 has to be lol'ing at this thread. SS used to be gospel and speaking ill of it was punishable by neg train.

competed in first PL meet this past weekend, there was a team called starting strength, lets just say they did not look like this, in fact most of the competitors were on a a strength routine and had really nice physiques, men and women alike. Dunno why the hate for SS

I wrote that article.
I have already commented on most of this at the starting strength forums, so check out that discussion there if you want.
All I want to say is that, I tried to recomp for the first 7 months with high protein and maintenance calories - nothing happened. Then I tried a clean bulk with a slight surplus and I stalled all the time. Finally, I added milk to my diet as advised for "hardgainers" and I was able to maintain LP and added tons of strength and fat.
Conclusion: I couldn't sustain linear progression on SS unless I ate like a cow. In my opinion SS is a poor beginner routine for skinny-fat people, because it requires a caloric surplus to sustain LP, and that will get you fat. I never said SS is bad for everyone.ISSA Certified Personal Trainer
