As others said, use spinlocks. You buy the handles and weight plates, and add or remove plates to increase or decrease the weight.
Or you can get something like this, which is similar -

But yeah, there's no reason to buy the fixed-weight dumbbells if you're on a budget. They're convenient if you have plenty of space, a dumbell rack, and plenty of money. But not necessary.

You waited all of 4 minutes to bump this?
Dumbbells are supposed to come in pairs? I always thought all the gyms I went to that had pairs of dumbbells were just typical examples of American opulence. I've always done unilateral dumbbell presses on a stability ball so it was never an issue."It is my own fault for replying in a smith thread." deadwoodgregg

Iron is just plain expensive these days.
A dollar a pound was outrageous at one time.
As the others said search around the net for used stuff thats where you'll get a better deal.
If you need them now,get adjustable DB handles and make your own heavy DB's.
Probably the ones for olympic plates.
Remember they are essentially a one time buy and will be around for a life time if that makes it any easier to shell out the cash.

Like others said above, just keep an eye out on craigslist.
I just scored a pair of Power Blocks off of CL for $200, with a table.
I'd really take a look at them if you are in the market for some Dumbbells. http://www.powerblock.com/prod_homeuse_elite5-90.php

Ha! repped
OP, basically, these are your options (I've owned all of these):
1) Spinlock - cheapest, inconvenient
2) PowerBlock, Ironmaster - expensive, moderately inconvenient
3) Sets of hex or pro dumbells - most expensive, most convenient but take up lots of space
You would be surprised the deals that you can get on CG. My personal experience:
- had 200 lbs of spinlocks and 4 handles thrown in for FREE on a squat rack deal
- 5-45 lbs of hex metal dumbells AND Powertec rack purchased for $150
- purchased nearly new 5 - 50 lbs of chrome dumbells and $400 Hampton rack for $800 (not necessarily a huge deal but they were in great condition)
I eventually sold all of these for more than their purchase price and have now invested in new chrome Ivankos and a Rae Crowther Pro dumbbell rack (which I'm anxiously awaiting).
