Thread Rules
Rule 1: Don't come in here to troll or bash firearms owners. You will be swiftly negged in the ass. Also be advised that we have one full time resident Mod and about three part timers, so you never know who is watching. (hello NSA, and **** you)
Rule 2: Don't be afraid to ask questions, but do a little research on your own first. Semi-intelligent questions are welcome.
Rule 3: Do simply not ask what gun you should buy for concealed carry. This question is very difficult to answer as individual needs and preferences vary greatly, and we're all tired of repeating ourselves. Do some research first, even if it's just reading the MFC for awhile, or searching gun forums to get a general idea.
Rule 4: DON'T BASH OTHER POSTERS ABOUT THEIR PURCHASES. If you would rather have or prefer something else, go ahead and state that. And why. We aren't above scuffles over brands or preferences. But don't bash.
Rule 5: Do NOT link to any illegal firearms instructions or sites.
Rule 6: DO NOT THREATEN OTHER POSTERS.
Rule 7: We have several regular posters who are trapped behind enemy lines in states such as California, Connecticut, New York, Hawaii, New Jersey, etc. Feel free to ask them which laws of their state are the most unConstitutional/most ridiculous. I suggest starting with the New York SAFE act or anything out of Cali.
Rule 8: If you acquire a new firearm, you must post pictures. Don't be an airsoft warrior. (RIP Livebrah)
Rule 9: When posting links to hunting photos that might be considered "graphic", please put a NSFL or NSFW warning.
The Four Rules of safe gun handling
1. All guns are always loaded.
2. Do not allow the muzzle to point at anything you are not willing to destroy.
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.
4. Know your target and your backstop.
Tips for debating with anti-gun individuals
1. Use facts that you can cite whenever possible. These discussions/arguments are often nothing but emotion and ignorance on the side of the gun grabbers. We have the facts, the evidence, the real world on our side. USE IT. Example: http://www.guncite.com/ If they present information as if it is a fact, ask for a cite. If they provide one, investigate it. The vast majority of the time they either won't have a citation (because they or somebody else made it all up), or the citation, once investigated, will yield a ridiculous "study" whose sole purpose was to create intentionally deceiving "information".
2. Always give or request a definition of terms. No productive conversation can be had if the two sides are using the same term while referring to different things. If somebody uses a term or phrase like "child", "youth", "use", "assault rifle", "assault weapon", "gun violence", etc, find out precisely what that word or term means. Antis love to mislead and deceive by using terms to make things sound different than they really are. Some examples I have encountered included "children" going all the way up to 20 years old or "gun violence" numbers (implication being all instances of said 'gun violence were bad) that include lawful and justified use of firearms by citizens and police in self defese.
3. Realize the difference between a person whose opinion you can sway (even if you don't change it there, but merely plant the seed) and a person who is absolutely dead set in their opinion. Often you can tell the dead-set type because they completely ignore all facts and evidence that do not support their position, rely on a lot of emotion, and probably react very aggressively when called out on their bull****. Where you cannot change their opinion it is still a good idea to counter their statements, where their statements are incorrect or misleading, because there will likely be fence sitters who haven't yet made up their mind that are listening in, or who will read the thread/discussion later. It's good not to let rampant bull**** go unchecked. Plant the seed of knowledge and critical thinking whenever possible!
4. Remember that the Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of American DOES NOT GRANT US THE RIGHT TO KEEP AND BEAR ARMS. The Second Amendment PROTECTS THAT RIGHT FROM INFRINGEMENT. There is a difference. The right is a pre existing natural right (some say it came from God) that is protected from infringement by the government via the 2A.
If you are totally new to firearms find a basic/entry level class to take . NRA Basic is a good place to start. Project Appleseed shoots are a great place to get the fundamentals of rifle marksmanship (www.appleseedinfo.org). If you know how to work your rifle that is where I would go. If you don't know how to work your rifle I'd got to an NRA basic rifle course and then to an Appleseed.
Beware of information from gun store or range employees. Unfortunately the level of advice these guys often offer is similar to what you get from commercial gym's personal trainers. Some of the most asinine advice passes over gun store counters.

Check out this progress! Right-to-carry laws. This map refers to handguns
Constitutional Carry/Unrestricted = Open or concealed carry without a license. This is the way it SHOULD be.
Shall Issue = Anybody and everybody who meets the requirements (these vary by state, but generally are a criminal background clean enough to buy a gun, some money, and maybe a training class) will be given a license upon application. Shall Issue is pretty darn good overall, even though it still turns a Right into a mere privilege.
May Issue = Even if you meet the requirements the chief law enforcement officer (CLEO) of your jurisdiction (often the county sheriff) can say "no" to your license for no reason at all, so permit status varies by county within these states. Personally I think this is the worse, even worse than no-issue, because it allows those with connections, money, political corruption, etc, to do things that regular citizens can not.
No Issue = SUCCESS! This now only applies to D.C.
