in the latest flex they follow his chest workout(pre contest, carb depleted) and he does dips with 200 pounds(4 big chains) around his neck, does a drop set, 26 reps total...wow, insane

Just that, given what he benches and squats, it doesn't seem that much, if I was to compare it to myself.
I only bench 225. He does more than double that.. and yet is 'only' dipping another 2 plates over me.. But overall he's dipping 440, I'm dipping 290. Given his size, strength and profession, it just doesn't seem that impressive.
8 plates. That would be impressive.

He did this just before a comp? Well, thats another story (/me reminds himself to read the first post more thoroughly next time . His strength is probably 60-80% of what it is normally and endurance is probably 50-60%.
Given this I'd imagine he'd be doing working sets with 6 plates in the off season.
Yes, I've tried training carb depleted (not at 20 weeks of dieting though, I'd be so skinny I couldn't walk outside in a strong breeze).

There's an ex-powerlifter at my gym who weighs around 220 (ripped), and I've seen him do dips with 5 plates attached for 15 reps. I thought the chain was going to break. To give you an idea of what that strength translates to, I've also seen him do a 495lbs. decline bench for four reps with no shirt support. And he hasn't lifted competitively in years. So those dips are totally within Branch's capacity. Again, the cool thing about the article wasn't that he was doing dips with 200 extra pounds attached, or doing them for 26 reps, but that HE WAS DRAPING FRIGGIN' CHAINS AROUND HIS NECK!!! How hardcore were those pictures? Gotta' love Branch, the guy rules.

Nobody has or is trying to deny it.....so its not needed to say this.
Dont understand now and never will understand why people feel a compulsion to make comment about steroids everytime the size, strength, shape, leanness or vascularity of a pro is mentioned.....everyone here already knows that pro bodybuilders use steroids. Get over it people.

As a natural I did 2 x 20kg + 1 x 25kg plates for 18 -20 reps on dips with good form at 240 bodyweight...That's around the 140lbs mark and others would do comparable amounts and more just in my gym. This was dietong too!
Now back at 240 again on gear (a lot leaner ) I can do decent rep ranges, 10+ with 40 to 60kg on a chain, again, dieting and after a few exercises.
I think weighted chins are a lot more impressive for a heavier person as the range of motion is killer. I can hardly do my bodyweight for decent reps on chins so I do rack chins to take my weight out of it. Vic Martinez is the only bodybuilder I know who does weighted chins, although JOJ probably could seeing the ease he did his bodyweight for in his first dvd.Carlsberg don't do sexy, but if they did...

yea the article said he was on 50g of carbs that week...plus this was at the end, after doing heavy incline, heavy flat, dumbell press, and cable crossover, also the cahins were big powerlifting chains, not chains with plates....he put it around his neck cuz he said when that much weight is around ur waist it can pinch ur balls
i took some pics from the magazine, so prolly not that great, but i tried

I guess I am still going to give Branch the benefit of the doubt, but you don't see a lot of fake plates either, do you? My point is that if it's needed for a photo shoot, it's not hard to get a hold of. And since the muscle mags let the lifters use fake plates on other lifts, well then it's not a question of integrity either - it isn't there.

way back when, Marvin Eder was like the 2nd or 3rd man to bench 500 lbs. He did a dip with like 435 lbs attached, lol. He probably weighed around 198ish
there are pics of him dipping with 2 dudes hanging onto him, lol
here is an old article http://www.americanpowerliftevolutio...MarvEder2.html
note it says he did 8 sets of 10 with 220 on dips
just for old school perspective....notice that at the time this article was written, when they said "how much do you press?" they meant overhead...not bench press.
So that was before bench took over as the "main" strength/ego lift.
it mentions that he "supine presses" 450.....but notice how that was just sort of casually mentioned as an asideLast edited by John Prophet; 02-24-2007 at 10:48 AM.
