IMO there are two reasons why bitcoin rose after the silk road bust
1. Silk road's assets were seized by the DEA. This removed them from circulation, making all the bitcoins in existence more valuable.
2. China is using bitcoins. They are accepted as payment by the top search engine and many suppliers.

$28.5 million seized. But I may be wrong about that being a huge factor. The market capital (all bitcoins in existence) is ~$3.3 billion. So its not much of a percentage.
But Chinese companies adopting it, definitely doesn't hurt the value. I know the company I work for does a lot of business in china, and some of it they pay for in western unions. Seems like bitcoin is taking that market over.- root console

I'd say having balls is the biggest thing now. Every time over the past few years I've seen it go up, I've said to myself "ha, it's going to crash eventually" and it hasn't seemed to have done so yet. I know I still wouldn't have the balls to invest now.
Lose your password, hard drive crash, he had them stored online; lots of things.
IIRC, that's how they're put into circulation anyway. I remember speaking to people in 09/10 who would have entire rigs set up for the sole purpose of bitcoin mining.Aria Company crew
