Does anybody have experience with ACL reconstructive surgery for a partial ACL tear? My orthopedist told my that some people can live without their acl just fine and that in the end, "my knee will make the decision for me." I like to lead an active lifestyle so I am leaning towards the surgery. Any input would be appreciated.

A discussion of limitations regarding the knee with a physician skilled in knee biomechanics is in order. Specifically you need an assessment of how strong the knee will be and limitations if you/do not choose surgery. If the knee is unstable as it stands right now, what does that mean in terms of daily life activities specifically? And with surgery, how long will the surgical job hold up and what, when completing healed will the post operated knee be able to accomplish?
Unfortunately surgery is not always some miraculous thing that fixes everything and is not without risk during and after the operation. So all the pros/cons of this life choice should be evaluated in depth. Given that your vitals are stable, it is not a life death situation that you must rush into. You need solid facts and statistics of the operation success and should also look at the credentials for the surgeon you are choosing.

hey, i just had surgery a week ago, so i can't really speak about being fully recovered. but i partially tore my acl at first (almost two years ago) and decided to live with it. basically if you do sports, it's a bad idea not to get the surgery. i kept reinjuring it to the point where 3 months ago it finally tore completely and i just simply regret not having the surgery sooner. if i did i'd be back to 100% now but instead i'm stuck at home doing nothing. then again, if you aren't doing some sort of active sport then living without your acl isn't that bad. i was able to squat (ass to grass) and deadlift as well as everything else in the gym just fine. it's the twisting/pivoting/cutting that will hurt you
