Things are going to be pretty dull in here for the next several weeks though; you showed up in here when I'm restricted from weight training. But all things will pass, and this downturn is no different.

But what you'll find, if you read back, is that I still follow all the basics, the very same stuff that I preach to noobs in the open forums.

Hey, Jason; thanks. This is really odd; I've never had anything like this keep me from training in all my years, or prohibit me from doing yard work, or working on the house or my cars/truck. Before I retired back in 2006, I had a few minor on-the-job injuries that slowed me down for a week or so each, but I've been fortunate to have had very good health and an avoidance of any training injury at all.

My Dermatologist said that a high percentage of people who reach my age will have a skin issue of some sort; that surprised me, until she also said that what I was experiencing was the result of sun exposure when I was a teenager. Back then, nobody gave a thought to being out in the sun all day long, every day. I know I sure didn't.

And just the day before my surgery, I bought a bunch of new lawn-care equipment; I'm not allowed to handle any of it for at least the next two weeks.
    No brain, no gain.

Thanks, lj. I knew several months ago this was coming; I just didn't know exactly when, or what the ramifications might be at that time. I've since found out that it's all treatable, and fortunately, not life-threatening. I'll put up with all of it (maybe not gladly), and am thankful that it's not far more serious.

Bill, just saw your newer posts and I 'm confident you'll heal well and be back at what you enjoy doing in remarkable time. These short term setbacks help me remember that things could be a lot worse. Do what you're able & looking forward to seeing you back in the gym.

P.S. Thankfully, you can still lift a cup of coffee during the healing process.

So far so good, Bob; thanks. I'll have these stitches removed in about 10 more days, and during that same office visit, have two more procedures performed. I'll get stitches with those two, and however much healing/recovery time the Doctor prescribes. I'm going strictly by Doctor's orders during this whole thing, and not even gonna think about sneaking down there and lifting any weights or any other physical activity that involvers moving my arms with any weight.

P.S. Thankfully, you can still lift a cup of coffee during the healing process.

If I couldn't at least handle a coffee mug, I'd be in dire straits!

Hi, Lisa! I'm healing, and it seems to be going well. If I don't do anything dumb, I should be past all of this by the end of this month.

Please tell Jim I said hello, and thanks to both of you for your concern and support.

It's more than good fortune, it's also intelligently timed de-loads and attention to proper form. Bummer that you can't play with the new toys yet! Glad you're rolling with it well, enjoy the spring!

Thanks, Jason. Not being able to do much of anything is tough, and I still have another two procedures to go through next week and then deal with more recovery.

    But this too will pass.

I'm healing okay so far. I'll get these current stitches removed next week, and during that same visit, have procedures performed on two other sites. Two weeks after that, those stitches should be removed, and then I'm assuming the Doctor will green-light me to get back to at least some exercise.

While you heal I'll give you some movie trivia. I know that you like a lot of the 1950's b-movies, and my son and I are watching The Blob for the first time. And do you know who stars in it (I'm sure you do), but it's STEVE MCQUEEN! I had no idea. And the leading lady is Andy Griffith's girlfriend Helen.

Hey what’s up Bill. Long time no see. I’ve been busy chasing a 3 and 1 year old around so I don’t make it around to the forums often. I surely wasn’t expecting to see this. Very sorry about your medical issues, that’s a huge bummer, but it’s really nothing more than a “ minor “ set back. Nothing you can’t handle.

As usuall the food pics still look amazing and to no surprise you still have your glass of milk with every meal. Those meatballs looked delicious! I’ll be around a bit more from here on out. Hope you continue to recover quickly Bill!

LOL. That was among his first movies, maybe even the first one where he was even credited in the credits by name. I didn't realize Aneta Corsaut (Helen) was also in there; good find!

Hello, Steve! Indeed, I'll get past this; it'll just take a few more weeks of patience on my part along with at least two more visits to the Doctor. This was the first potentially serious health issue I've had since I was a kid, so I consider myself fortunate.

I'm aware of the time that kids require, but that sure is a good thing. Our youngest grandchild is now almost 10 years old; they grow up so quickly.

I really enjoy cooking (and eating), and with this season's herb garden already doing well out on the deck, I'm looking forward to many more tasty meals. I've cut my calorie intake way back to compensate for my current inactivity (besides no weightlifting, I can't do much of anything else that requires stretching or lifting anything), and it will have to remain that way for the next couple of weeks. The quantity of calories has been reduced, but certainly not the quality.

Thanks for the support; it's appreciated. It's good to see you in here.

Wow, that’s really cool. One of these summers id like to get a little garden started in the back yard. Nothing special just a small one with some tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers. It will have to wait till the girls get a little bigger so I don’t have to worry about them running in it. Yes kids are amazing. Two girls for me.

And I’m also cutting back the calories. It can be tough at times but it’s doable. I just started a cut about 2 weeks ago. My wife told me she was annoyed lol. A good annoyed. She had currently dieted and worked out for 9 weeks and she looks great, but she says I can already tell a big difference with you and you just started. WTH!! I guess I’m doing something right!! Anyhow I’m in the caloric deficit with you Bill!

Growing herbs in containers is pretty easy; once they're potted up, about all they require is regular watering, and pinching out the basil to keep it compact and bushy. We keep them (herbs) up on the deck, where they're just a few steps away from the kitchen. The difference in taste between fresh herbs and that dried 'stuff' in little containers from the grocery store is like night and day, not to mention the cost ($6.00 for a half-ounce of dried rosemary??? good grief). I remember, in particular, the first time I tasted home-grown fresh parsley, and how I was shocked at how good it tasted; nothing at all like that tasteless green powdery dreck called "dried parsley flakes." In the middle of Summer, when we step out on the deck, we immediately get the aroma of basil, rosemary, and lavender; it's that strong. The bees really like the lavender as well; they flock to it.

We had planned to put in a small raised garden out in the middle of the yard to grow a few tomato vines and some bell and hot peppers, but this medical thing came up and I've had to postpone that. Once I get a green like from my Dermatologist to become active again, I'll probably go ahead and build it so it'll be ready for planting next Spring.

I find that trimming calories is manageable simply by reducing portion size rather than denying myself foods I enjoy. I can't really think of a single thing we eat here that I consider to be a hindrance to good health; we very rarely eat prepackaged foods, so avoiding trans fats and chemicals is no problem at all. For us, it's simply about the basics---adequate macros, strict attention to micros, and keeping track of calories-in.

I bet it is night and day. And nothing better then stepping out on your deck and smelling all them good herbs. I can’t say I know anybody who grows them, but it’s definitely a great idea.

Yea I’m just watching my portions as well and upping the cardio a bit. I’ve always been able to trim down fairly quickly fortunately. Just gotta try and keep the mass. I’ve been doing more circuit training though. Kinda like a CrossFit routine without the heavy weights. I’ve been keeping it fairly light and doing higher reps. Just something new I’m experimenting with.

On my way to pick up some ribeyes to throw on the grill for mother day. Looking forward to that.

As I mentioned, in containers, all the care they require is watering when it doesn't rain. Next year, we're going to plant them in the ground (raised-bed garden). The seedlings themselves are inexpensive; we buy ours from a small, local, independent nursery); they were about $2.00 each. We bought some from Lowe's a couple of years ago and they didn't do well at all, which is an understatement.

Lulz. Indeed, Mark; it's the best thing to happen to poultry and roasts, as well as with roasted veggies. The plant grows very thick, and it's flavor is very strong, so just a little goes a long way in a recipe. I just can't overemphasize the difference between cooking with fresh, garden-grown herbs and that 'stuff' sold in grocery stores that we're stuck with during the Winter.

July 4 would be very ambitious; where you and I live, that would require planting before the last frost in some sort of enclosure like a cold frame outdoors. Lots of work involved in that.

Along with our usual herbs, I'm planning to plant a few tomato vines and some peppers next Spring. I had thought about container-growing them this year, but I didn't think the yield would be enough to merit the work involved.

Thyme, lavender, rosemary, chives, and oregano (there are others as well) are perennials; they come back every year; that big, flowering pot of chives (in the brown pot) is from last year. I usually empty the pots at the end of Winter and discard the plants though, since the potting soil has been pretty much exhausted. But that chive plant withstood -10 degree weather this past Winter, and it continued to grow; I didn't have the heart to discard it. And my wife likes the look of it since it started flowering, so we're leaving it. There was thyme in that same pot from last year, and I noticed a few days ago it was coming back out as well. All of these are going to get transplanted into the ground next Spring. I did that with last year's lavender, and it too is starting to grow back up.

I had my second, and hopefully final, procedure yesterday, so I'm restricted from any activity for at least another week. The toughest part about all of this is not being able to do much of anything, but I'm determined to follow Doctor's orders to the letter so the outcome will be the best possible.

Bought some new lawn care power equipment the day before all this medical stuff began, and so far can only go down to my workshop and stare at it. Same goes for some new mechanic's tools I recently bought.

Thanks, Mark. I can't ever remember any other time in my life when I've been so inactive, and for such a long period of time. Besides getting back to the gym, I've got a list of projects I want to accomplish as long as my arm, once I get a green light from the Doctor.

I don't know if you're a walker or not, but you and Sherman could get real familiar with your neighborhood now

We have been getting out a bit more frequently, but I've had a hard time getting a lightweight long-sleeve shirt on; no more sun for me.

My shoulders haven't really bothered me for a few years now, so I don't see any difference there. These days it's mostly my hands and wrists that have 'discomfort,' but only when I'm lifting/gripping heavy stuff, which I'm restricted from doing right now, so I can't really say there's any difference there either. I think it will be interesting though to see the effects of this layoff when I first get back to training.

    Time will tell, I guess.

As always Sherman knows what's up. This morning, in an ongoing medical issue from a few weeks ago (that also affected the grip in my left hand, I had a sizeable mole removed frm my back, and a smaller one from my chest. I've got a bunch of stitches in me, and I'm under Doctor's orders to lift nothing heavier than a cup of coffe for at least the next two weeks. So, I won't have much to post in here other than maybe to complain about not being able to train for at least the next two weeks. At that time, I have another procedure to go through, but with luck, that one won't keep me out of the gym completely.

Not much else to report for now. Things could be much worse; I'm thankful they're not.
I wondered why I had the sudden urge to check out bb.com even though I haven't done anything in a while.

I've been dealing with this stuff for 25 years now. Sounds like this was the more serious kind though. As long as it was caught early enough here's what I always say...cut it out, stitch it up, heal, and go on. I'm not sure how long I can keep that up though...running out of skin.

Great to see that you are still here keeping up the good work despite the little break. I know you don't want to hear this....but, dang, you're pretty amazing.

    Hello, Will!!!

I remember reading in your journal about your issues, and now I know first-hand where you're coming from. I'll get the stitches removed from the last two procedures this Thursday, and then a week after that I expect the Doctor to give me a green light to get back to activity. It's ridiculously difficult to be so restricted from doing anything; I've never had to deal with such an issue in my entire adult life.

I don't believe in coincidences; something made you stop in here. Thanks for the encouragement; it's appreciated.

It was good to see Sherman is still in this journal too! How old is he now?

I've been dogless now for over 6 years...first time in my life. I have a bird now though (not sure if that is how to do that anymore). She's SPOILED. I'll try to visit when you get back at it. Speaking of that I actually got back on the T-mill yesterday for 30 min.
    My current log

A step backwards is better than a setback.

If this (insert whatever trivial thing that is upsetting me) is the worst thing to happen today, I'm going to have a great day.

He was 12 last January, Will. He's had some ongoing health issues for the past few years, but with a very good veterinarian and diligence on our part, he's doing well. He's a good boy, and a real joy to us.

We've (my wife, actually, but I tend to agree with her on this) decided that when Sherman leaves us, we won't get another dog. But then, that's what we said when we lost Blondee. But my wife relented when she saw how much Blondee's passing affected me, and I started searching on the internet for another Cocker, and...............

My daughter had a bird for a while (I don't remember what kind it was, other than it didn't much like me!); but she gave it up in a divorce several years ago.

Good deal (?) on getting on the Dreadmill. I'll find out in a few hours whether or not I'm green-lighted to get back in action, but from what the Doctor said last week, I'll probably have at least one more week of light duty after these stitches get removed today.

Define "light duty?" I mean, for you, that might be:

    Romanian Deadlift 225x5
    Dips BW (only) x8
    Front Squats 185x5

    Hang in there Bill!

    Thanks for the support, guys.

I have to give it a few more days before getting back to weight training, and then it'll be light for a week or two. I'll do some sort of FB walk-through starting next week, three days a week. The last of the stitches came out today; the areas are pretty tender, and the Doctor told me to favor them for a while. I'm to pay particular attention to the incision on my neck, as she says it would be the most problematic if I stretch it too much too soon, so I'll make haste slowly.

All the biopsies came back showing clear margins, so I'm good to go. Until the next spot pops up. I'm already scheduled to go back to the Dermatologist in 6 months for a follow-up exam. I certainly plan to be there.
