I've been making my own meal replacement shakes with milk, oats, and protein. I want to add some ground flax seed but I've read in several places that once ground, they should be consumed quickly or else they will spoil.
If I make a shake in the morning and take it work with me, how long do you think I have to drink it before the flax goes bad or will it at all?

As soon as the fatty acids within the flax seed are exposed to oxygen, light and heat, they begin to be oxidized, i.e., they go 'rancid'.
I have no idea how long it would take for enough oxidation to occur to make this a problem, but I would guess that carrying your shake with you to work is not going to be a problem at all.
I tried to put Flax Meal/Flax Oil each in my shake once. The taste was so vile (1 tbsp oil/2 tbsp meal in 16 oz shake) that I had to throw away the last third. To take flax I use a recipe I gleaned from the Nutrition Forum and I can assure you these taste awesome (and happend to be good for you).
Protein PB Balls
I got this from another website and eat them when I have sugar cravings. Be careful they are addictive!
2 scoops chocolate whey
2 scoops flaxseed meal
4 tbsp natural peanut butter
4 packets sweet-n-low (or whatever you prefer)
1/4 c water (add slowly to check consistency)
Mix above ingredients in bowl. BE SURE to add water slowly and make sure the mixture can be formed. Shape into 1-1/2 inch balls.
If you add too much water, the mixture will get sticky. You want to be able to form balls or bars and then refrigerate and enjoy!
Breakdown (for approximately 3 balls)
370 calories
23 g fat (flax is an omega-3 and is very healthy & filling)
15 g carbs (6 of which is fiber which you don't need to count)
33 g protein
Flax oil and ground flax taste good to me. If your flax oil or ground flax tastes bad, it may be rancid. As I posted earlier, flax should be refrigerated. That includes flax oil, flax oil capsules, and ground flax. You should buy them that way also.
