On and off days? How much do you take? (I am currently using Beverly - good stuff right)

I see people take from just 60 to over 200 grams per day? Whats a good balance

eneral rule of thumb is 1g per lb body weight but if u weigh 160. its alot easier to get more as opposed to someone who weights 260. so at a lighter weight u can easily doubel ur daily intake.

~2g per lb is a pretty good target I often see quoted. For example if you weigh 180 pounds then 360 grams protein would be good. (On and off days)

I weigh 260lbs. I never believed I was supposed to take in that much, so I never go above about 125g. If you think about it, that's about 13 protein shakes. Who the hell has that kind of money/tolerance for protein shakes?

I personally feel like that "rule of thumb" is just a ploy to get people to buy more protein.

Ummm, your not supposed to get your daily amount of protein just from shakes, you can find protein in actual food too.

13 protein shakes? what kind of protein are you using bro? a decent quality whey will have around 20g per scoop...

EDIT: Maybe I'm confused, when I first read it I assumed you were talking about 125g of protein/daily = 13 shakes?

How many servings are you planning on using daily? You're going to be getting your protein from food sources also right? And 200g+ would be fine at your weight.

I know. From my diet I would prolly get about 60-70g of protein. Then to achieve the goal of 260g, I would need to take 10 shakes, which is rediculous.

I was referring to trying to get 260g per day. Most guys say 2g for every 1lb of body weight. If I want 260g per day (as in the last example) without going completely Atkins, I will need to take in about 10 shakes a day to make up for what i dont get from my diet. If I'm shooting for only 125g, I only need about 3 or four shakes, which I can handle (monetarily and digestively.)

depends on if you are bulking or cutting, when I'm cutting I do 1.5g or protein per pound of bodyweight, that way you spare more lean tissue, when I'm bulking, which takes a lot of carbohydrates, which happen to be anti catabolic, I'm down to 1g per pound of bodyweight. I think anything higher than 1.5g/lb is unecessary

OMG what do you eat? That's only 7oz of chicken breast an NOTHING else - do cottage cheese, yogurt, milk. Never mind most carb sources have some protein. Even on my limited carb diet I probably get well over 10-15g from foods that are considered carbs or fats.

I eat 180-230g or protein/day. zero 'shakes' although I do put 10-20g of whey in yogurt or cottage cheese or oats before or after WO. Getting to 200g from food seems easy, even on 2000-2400kcal/day.

I dunno, maybe I just don't know how to count protein. Can you look at my diet in my bodyblog? How much am I actually getting just from food everyday?

EDIT: I just looked up the nutritional info for chicken and a few other things, I feel like a moron. I actually am taking in almost 200g daily.

We learned in nutrition that the average male athlete needs only 80-100g of protein per day. My college professor who has a PH.D. said that people who take too much protein do not synthesize it and just excrete it. He said that protein supplements suggest 1g per lb of body weight to sell their product. Either way I think 1.5g per lb of body weight is just the right amount to get per day.

Also, protein from food > protein from supplements.

2g/lb is too general IMO. I'm sure it sould be some sort of logarithmic scale, because for someone 250lbs, 500g/day is definately not needed IMO.

No point of going above 1g per lb of LBM when bulking and 1.5g per lb of LBM when cutting, the rest is useless and you could be getting far more benefits hormonally and performance wise from fats and carbs replacing them.

I eat a minimum of 160g of protein per day usually reaching around 180g and cutting I aim for 240g

The rule of thumb from who though...the supplement companies selling protein. Ehhh.... Take whatever seems to be working.

Personally I think anything over 150g a day seems excessive. Unless you want to gain weight. If you want to maintain weight or lean out, you could get away with less.

I've read guys who take like 400+ grams a day....how is all of that even being utilized. Explain please...I want to know.

Your body will crave proteinrich foods when it needs them.

Maybe somedays you will eat 300g protein and others only 150g if you listen to your body.
