We have a firearm crew, I thought I could start an archery crew for the bowhunter's and archers out here on Misc.
This thread will be used to talk about gear, tackle, bows, shooting, help, tuning, bowhunting, and general archery here.

FAQ
How can I start shooting archery? With a bow and arrow would be ideal.
How many yards should my pins be? Up to you, the norm for hunting with 3 pins is 20,30,40 yards.
What bow is the best brand? Don't pick one only from what other people say, best option? Find a bow shop and shoot all the different ones they carry.
How many pounds for hunting? In my opinion (and you know what they say about those), anything over 30 pounds will kill an adult White Tail. You should be looking at Momentum and KE. (Refer to below for info on that)
What is momentum?? When I said refer to below, I mean a little further down.
How do I know what my draw length is? Did you not read the PDF? Do so now. Lots of great info
Rule #1, Never dry fire your bow.
Rule #2, Like firearms, know your backstop.
Rule #3, You don't have to spend a large amount money to enjoy the sport. Used bows are your huckleberry on a budget, also look for clearance
Rule #4, Don't knock other people for their bow brand choice.. unless it's a Hoyt
3D shooting courses are fun, if you want to have fun with family or friends I suggest at least shooting one once.

Bows
I suggest always shooting the bow you like first at a local shop, even if buying online. When you draw the bow back make sure you are not sky drawing, which would mean you are over bowed. You should be able to keep the bow on target while drawing back smooth.
A longer Axel to Axel length is popular out west and for target shooting, while a shorter bow is best suited for tree stand and blind hunting. A bow with a longer brace height will generally be more forgiving all though a modern bow will be more forgiving than bows of the older days.

Arrows
Always, always make sure you have the correct spine. It is better to be over spined than under. A under spined arrow can shatter when you release the string.
As for arrow length that is your personally choice. A good rule of thumb is that the arrow will sit midshelf at the very shortest length. I have a 29" draw with 28" arrows.

My favorite place, Jerry will custom make the arrows as you pick online, cut them, and has great customer service.

Momentum and KE, just what is it?
Kenetic Energy is just that, the energy of a speeding object. When a bow is at full draw it is storing the potential energy in the limbs, when the string is released the arrow becomes the medium for that energy. The further the arrow travels from the archer and bow, the more energy is lost. Which is why we limit our range when bowhunting.
Momentum is a product of mass times velocity. Momentum is the factor that makes a heavy hitting arrow.

Broadhead choice
See title for my choice this year. The Magnum's are in my bow case.
This is where I would say momentum plays a deciding factor in broadhead choice for what game you are hunting. If you are hunting with a bow that doesn't pack much MO then a fixed head would be my suggestion. They never fail to open with a lighter shooting bow (such as a wife/girlfriend/daughter)

Expandables are an option as well. With enough MO and arrow weight they can be devastating on any game. Most expandable broadheads have a larger cutting than a fixed head.. Larger entrance/exit = more blood = dead animal

Stabalizers
A stabalizer helps with bow noise and vibration while adding weight to the front end. Weight on the front end helps accuracy a lot when shooting. The lenght of the stab is your choice depending on what you are using the bow for. Target and western hunter's prefer a long stab, while eastern hunters tend to use a shorter one to keep the bow compact. I am a big fan of longer stabs.
Sights
The sight is an important choice when building an archery setup. The number of pins depends on you, the shooter. If you are hunting or shooting at closer range a simple 3 pin would be the general choice. Single pins are very popular as they clear up the sight housing and make it simple when shooting within a certain distance with a fast bow.
If you are shooting longer distance a single pin still be used, there are sights out there that allow you to tape a calcuated drop chart and adjust to the distance before shooting.
Releases
A nice, smooth release is a staple when hunting.

Pictures of your setup are a must of course..
I'm happy with my Bear, even more so since I got it for half off..
It'll shoot better than I can, 55 yards or my bottom pin.
I broke my lumenock a few weeks ago when my arrow smacked the other one in target. Broke the arrow and lumenock
Thank you and I hope we can help some new people enter the world of archery.

Give ya a bump. Used to shoot in 7th grade and was going to go out hunting with my uncle eventually. Got away from it due to sports and what not. Not much, just a 30 and 40lb from 25 yards out lol. I'd have to dig them out of the garage to tell ya the brand. Cool hobby though, wish I had more time.

I like it. Its very similar to the QAD dropaway (but $30 cheaper) and they didn't have any left handed ones at the shop when I was getting everything set up. I used a trophy taker drop away on my old hoyt cybertec and I actually like the rip cord better. Actually, alot of people from my area are using the rip cord over the QAD.

when I was researching quivers for my bow I ran across an argument between drop aways and WB's for accuracy. I then watched a video of a guy shooting a target 100 yards away with a WB. they're accurate. but if you're looking for FPS.. who knows. to each their own. They are nice for not having the arrow fall off when you're moving around. I am tempted to setup my chrono to see what my fps is. Maybe I'll do that tomorrow since its my rest day.

In on this thread!!!!!!!! I have been meaning to get into archery but lack of local facilities plus money make it hard as feck!!!!!
I heard archery also builds up a muscular body...........is this true.
I know the archers of the old ages would have really long bows and it would take like 200lbs of pulling power to fire one of those! Let alone, 50 arrows in a row. I wonder what muscles the archer has well developed!????
