hi all.
what's the fundamental difference between protein and creatine? from all i read, creatine i essentially adding water mass to muscle making them look larger, but pretty temporary.
protein is obviously the long term option to gain muscle mass and retain it but is there benefit to using both? between pre work out and protein, i'd hate to introduce yet another shake into my daily routine if the benefits weren't obvious.
thanks for any tips.

Protein is food buddy. You eat it everyday - Protein supplements are simply a way to add more protein to your diet. No protein = no muscle gain. You can definitely get enough with supplementing, it is more for convenience sake.
Creatine put simply, yes it does slightly add water to your muscles.. but that definitely is not why everyone serious about lifting uses it. It restores your ATP faster(pretty much, just think that you'll have more energy during short term anaerobic activities - aka - weightlifting.. allowing you to push a couple extra reps than usual)
Therefore the perfect supplement for people in the gym.

If you want a delicious protein to help you hit your macronutrient goals, give Big Blend a try. White Chocolate is my favorite flavor. Sooooo delicious.

Protein powder is an easy way to fit in your protein needs for the day, as was mentioned before, it's food. Creatine is a supplement that helps with strength and size.

Protein is an essential part of your nutrition.
So, the question is, do you need to supplement it? It depends. You should analyze your diet for a week or so and see how much protein you take in on a daily basis without supplementation. If you are taking in as many grams of protein as pounds you weigh (for instance, 200 grams for a 200 pound person), you are getting more than enough. If you're lower, like half as many grams as you weigh (100 grams for a 200 pounder), you should check out a protein product like SAN Titanium Whey - I say this because SAN Titanium Whey is pure whey with no fillers, no added sugars or fats, and tastes absolutely delicious in Chocolate Rocky Road, Chocolate Graham Cracker, and Vanilla Butterscotch.
If you are getting enough protein without supplementing via whey powder, then you should pick out some creatine instead. you can go with something basic, like SAN Micronized Creatine Monohydrate. This is just pure creatine and in the form that has been studied to be effective. This is cost effective and can be mixed with other supplements or beverages. You can also get your creatine as part of a preworkout drink, like SAN Fierce Domination, which has a full serving of "designer" creatines in every serving. This will give you focus, pumps, energy, and improved recovery along with the benefits of creatine.
You can always get protein AND creatine, of course! They don't work together, per se. Protein is more important since it is a part of your diet, but it doesn't affect creatine either way. Creatine does not replace protein either. Taking them together is best, but if you are to take one I would say take protein, but only if you aren't getting enough protein in your diet. You don't need to supplement protein if you eat enough of it already. However beautiful the strategy, you should occasionally look at the results - Dr. John Berardi

Protein is basically a food sup to help reach your daily protein needs which is more important than getting your 5g creatine/daily
take your creatine and hit your protein goals for the day.
