Moral support for a girl I'm interested in

Do things with her to get her mind off it. You don't need to constantly talk about depressing things to be supportive, just occupy her mind with other things.

Side note: If she is the type of girl that only just blabs about her problems all the time, listening and talking about it would be the best way to get with her. However, avoid her if this is the case as her issues will screw up the relationship.

First of all we're both 20 and in university. I've been getting to know this girl a little bit at a time for about 1month. We're both interested in each other, but she's been having some family problems. Her sister is going to be having major surgery tomorrow and theres a pretty small chance that she'll make it. Obviously, this is tearing this girl up. I'm not this girl's boyfriend, so I can't just give her all my attention... We're not REALLY close friends either. We're just friends and interested in each other.

I'm not sure what my role in supporting her in this tough time should be. It probably sounds pretty selfish but I don't want to get to close to her because that's not what I want right now. But I do want to offer her some type of support without going to far. I could see being with her down the road for sure. Any ideas of some things I can do for her as a concerned friend would be appreciated.
