Herro Nmisc.
I'm looking at moving away from Minnesota in a few months but i'm having trouble deciding where; mostly looking Northeaster US.
Things that are important are having lakes/rivers around, access to large cities (Within a 2-3 hour drive), good art scene (music/painting/etc/food, etc)
Philadelphia: I was in Philly a few months ago, i liked the city a lot but I wasn't able to spend to much time there. I don't know anybody there but have heard its an affordable place to live.
North Easter New Jersey: Not in a specific city but its close to NY, and last time I was there it wasn't to crazy busy with traffic and things. I heard that car insurance is really expensive there so that could cause problems.
Boston: I thought Boston was very clean when I as there last, but I feel it would be affordable
NYC: Not really looking to move into the city unless somebody had something I didn't think of to say about it
Columbus Ohio: This city is pretty much perfect, but its about 600 miles west of where I want to be.
Salt Lake City: I know a bunch of people in SLC that want me to move there, i just feel like it would lack lakes, etc... and I think east coast > west coast area.
I plan on moving away for around a year (maybe a bit more) before moving home. My budget will be whatever a 19 yo kid without a college education can find, probably a job at a co-op or whole foods, maybe a target.
Thanks

SLC is nice bro. There are mountain lakes & reservoirs, but nothing like back east. Lake Powell is awesome and only 5 hours away, and we have the best national parks & wilderness areas in the country, no contest. Come at me.

^ haven't been to either but I hear they're both great young people towns
i love love love boston, but i don't really know what your living conditions would be if you're not in a salaried job. nyc's the same way.
what about boulder? gorgeous city, big collegetown, plenty of stuff to do. and no that's not a euphemism for illegal (everywhere else) substances. or is it? idk, but i'd check it out.

Grew up in the Pacific Northwest (2 hr north of Seattle) and aside from the fact that the weather is going to turn grey very quickly its an amazing city and a beautiful place.
Look into Bellingham WA, its roughly 2 hr north (20 min from my hometown) and I think it fits all your requirements. Your right on the San Juan islands, hour and a half from awesome skiing on mt Baker and tons of awesome hiking trails. plus its a pretty artsy town with quite the culture.

Hey buddy where the hell you been? What's the purpose of this move other than to get away from BS? Some have suggested Seattle, etc. but with your history I would suggest a place with plenty of sunshine as opposed to constant cloudy weather. Good to see you back. Stick around.

Move to the South. Lots of lakes and rivers, low cost of living, easy to find a job. Atlanta, Nashville, Memphis, Chattanooga, Birmingham are all within a few hours of each other. Food is great here.

Yeah, doing my master's so I'll be here for 2 years. So far I've loved it, but I was also lucky enough to meet a good tour guide and she's been showing me the ropes.
I'm in-between fairmount/centre city area. Which I love the area, tons of things to do. At this point, I'm still in my honeymoon phase where I just love everything. Soon enough I'm sure things will begin to annoy me

What about Chicago? It fits your criteria besides not being in the Northeast. It may be too expensive for you not having a job but you should consider it

1. Hiding
2. No avi no care?
3. Some things don't change
Yeah if i moved out there I could really see myself just going and chilling in the mountains. I've hiked in montana a few times and I cant imagine the mountains between there and Utah being too different
Yeah Boston is honestly one of my favorite cities i've ever been in, i just cant imagine it being affordable for me.
Maybe i'll go out and visit my buddy and see how I like it. I'm a big fan of hiking, im sure I could find people to hike with or just go alone
Upstate New York could be nice. But I figure if I was in the North Eastern are I'd just go to philly. Is Upstate NY kinda like the Jersey countryside? Simple and country?
Noted
Unfortunately I currently live at home so I don't think that would work lol
I took two road trips out east earlier this summer (alone) and I just loved the North East. I want to have more access to it all. It would be cool to only have to drive 100-200 miles to boston, ny, jersey, etc... Rather than 1200-1600 lol
I don't think I could do the south. Seems to warm and country, not meaning to offend (i know you guys get mad when we call your livelihood warm)
I love philly too. I could very easily see myself ending up there
If I was gonna move to Chicago I might as well just move to Minneapolis. Its way too close lol

The suburbs of Detroit are nice, but cost of living in these areas can be a downfall. I have spent time in Birmingham, Rochester, Shelby Township, and Troy.
One area you may like in the northeast is Manchester, New Hampshire.JDJ's 5/3/1 Revamped

I'd say somewhere around Philly would be good.
I go to school in Lancaster which is about an hour and a half out from Philly and for the size of the town has a pretty nice art scene. You'd be kinda boned on lakes and rivers unless you went over towards Harrisburg though. Lots of cool little stuff around here though and close enough to Philly while still being outside of the BIG city.
Edit: If you're a fan of hiking the Appalachian Trail is pretty close by as well.Always learning, Always growing, Never satisfied

The mountains are pretty similar. The big difference from most Rocky Mountain cities is that slc is literally in the mountains. When I go running from my house I go up a canyon into the mountains - and I live downtown. Can go on crazy hikes with trailheads <30 minutes away. World class skiing within 40 minutes of either my home or office in the winter. Arches, canyonlands, capitol reef, Bryce & Zion all less than 5 hours away. That's the thing about Utah - if you like the outdoors you're already in them.
