Was never extremely poor, in fact pretty baller until I was about 11, but after a series of really bad investments and my parents deciding to continue to live a high end lifestyle from savings while always hoping the next thing would pay off made us pretty poverty.

brb going from 7 bedroom 5 bath house to moving in with grandmother
brb going from new clothes and toys all the time to never getting anything and clothes once a year(Although I never asked for things even when we had $$)
brb PS1 throughout HS
brb be in highschool with rich friends you grew up with and never being able to go out, not even being able to pitch in for little ceasers
brb made my dad drop me off 2 blocks away from school so no one would see our poverty car


I feel ****ty because of how ashamed I was at being poverty. I basically cut off all friends because I was too ashamed, and in retrospect they wouldn't have minded that we were poor.

Glad my family is doing a lot better now.

Kids bringing in nice looking school projects and reports; meanwhile your crappy computer at home doesn't even have Word so you have to use Wordpad, and your parents won't buy you materials for projects.

Kids wearing new, brand name/designer clothes; you wearing your father's oversized hand-me-downs.

Kids with latest games, gadgets, Walkmans, CD players, etc, enjoying themselves during free periods; you sitting there doodling or reading library book.

Kids getting food and having fun after school; you have no pocket money.

Kids going on vacation to theme parks, baseball/basketball games, WWF, concerts, movies, Broadway shows, skiing, skating; your parents never took you anywhere.

Kids playing in their backyards; you live in a tiny apartment.

Kids have their own rooms full of awesome stuff; you sleep in living room.

Didn't see the inside of a movie theater till you were 12 years old.

Do you realize what feels your father had when his son was so ashamed that he didn't want to see dropped off to school? That his own son was so ashamed that he couldn't afford to give him a proper lifestyle that he wouldn't be ashamed of it... can't even imagine how much that can hurt. I could never tell my dad smth like that. Would rather be ashamed myself.
