Seriously though OP:

I consider myself qualified to give this advice because my girlfriend is a bit of a fashion fiend and she wouldn't go out with somebody badly dressed.

I would suggest investing decent money in items you can wear often - for example jeans, shoes, shorts etc. Wear those nice things most days and then rotate cheaper clothes around the nice items. I would suggest investing in two pairs of decent jeans (look at Levi's and Diesel), some reasonable shorts and some decent shoes (I like the new Vans OTW bedford shoes).

Other than that I think it's crucial to own one or two nice shirts (I like Ted Baker for shirts), decent underwear (calvin klein) and some decent cologne (I like Boss Bottled by Hugo Boss).

T-shirts are what I wear day to day. I wouldn't worry too much about getting brands - the fit is much more important

Leather jackets are awesome as well if you can afford a decent one... cheap ones tend to look like bin-liners...

A while back our class was having a discussion about this and the teacher asked the girls what they think is attracted about guys, and most of the girls in the class agreed that its attracted when a guy wears fitting clothes and semi tight shirts (if he's muscular enough) and tank tops. They said its unnatractive when guys sag their pants noticeably and wear too big of shirts.

That's probably just my school though, even though its a public school it reminds me a lot of a private school because of the mentality everyone has.

Why pay for a $300 jacket from True Religion, and get almost the same exact one at Nordstroms Rack for $120 (except it won't be that years latest style from True Religion, it might be a 2-3 year old brand new jacket. Cause apparently fashion is like technology and they feel they must bring out a whole new style or fashion every year, like an iPhone, if you have an iPhone 5 now, get prepared for it to become outdated with the iPhone 5S/6, the only difference with fashion, is that there's not a whole lot of a difference)?!
