thought the same thing when I first heard him. Honestly think he has top 5 potential now. His lyrics are IMMENSELY layered, complex and beautiful. Look up 'No Make Up' and 'Barbed Wire'.

1. they genuinely don't like him
2. don't understand his lyrics
3. too accustomed to "punch line rappers" and or high production value tracks

most people fall into camps 2 and 3 (though they're not mutually exclusive)

The hell you talking about, I probably listen to all the Hip Hop classics everyone talks about and I still love Kendrick. I'm not saying GKMD is this generations Illmatic but its def one of the best CD's of the past couple of years.

The Recipe, Good kid Maad City, Rigamortis, The Art of Peer Pressure, Backseat Freestyle, Bitch dant kill my vibe, poetic justic and money trees are all good songs. Swimming Pools sucks imo.

His music is actually not that great.

The older music he made with Black Hippy was good, but his newer stuff is not impressive.

This new verse he released on that track with Big Sean just shows how many phonies there are listening to Rap. I'm seeing people on big websites, ktt, wshh, even here on misc, saying that that Kendrick Lamar verse is the hardest and most lyrical verse ever in Rap. Bro, wtf?
