It takes a lot of skill to be a good car salesman. To make great money as a sales person - you have to be very charming, endlessly patient with people (as so many customers are fukking retards), work very very hard, be smart and be good with numbers


I don't understand why so many people think it's an easy job or a lowly job. There's a reason good car salesmen can make 100-150K a year. Companies aren't stupid - they wouldn't pay good workers that much if it was easy

Their job is to make you pay as much money as possible for a car. when i buy a car, they are the enemy, cause they're trying to steal my hard earned money.

Source: I used to be a home theather salesman. Hated the people I worked with and the whole system of pushing clients and being pushed by my boss.

Well, let's see, your job is to BS your way through a sale and screw over the customer as much as you possibly can so that you can profit more. Then, you pass that person off to the warranty guy, who bends that person over a barrel again, and rapes their already sore butthole. Maybe that's why.

You're right with regards to the mega dealerships, but there are a handful of 30-40 car lots in every town that treat their customers right.

I make quite a bit more than that cause I work very hard and I'm good at my job (good at negotiating). The top 10-20% of people in the business can make from 80-150+K

Not really. The average income in the business is 30-40K. How do people selling a 30K product not deserve to make 30-40K a year?

There's a happy point though where you get a discount and the dealership still makes some sort of a profit


The problem is people like you are stupid and think that there's 10,000 dollars of markup/profit on cars and a dealership can discount a car by 8K and they're still making that much profit. It doesn't work that way - I make nothing unless I sell the car at least somewhere around 1000 over invoice...which is a perfectly fair price. You go into any other industry and they sell you products that are marked up like 100% over invoice, not just a few % like in cars

I think people look down upon used car salesmen since they're seen as sleazy and liars since you never know what kind of car they're selling you. A stereotype that I've found to be mostly true to be honest with you. Back when I was shopping for my first car, some dude wanted to sell me a 2005 VW Jetta with 100,000 miles on it for $12,000. I told him to faurk off.

I think people have a generally neutral view of salesmen at dealerships.

I think you get ripped off by the business, sales cars but can't afford the car you sale? example bugatti car salesman of the year got a christmas card, after selling like 20+ bugatti cars, why can't they just give that guy a free bugatti? and why can't he afford one if he selling 20+ of em?

Well, when you are at work from 9 am to 9 pm, 6 days a week, and sometimes later then that, you ought to be making some decent bread. But when you factor in all the hours you spend working, you're not doing all that great.

In fact, I only go to a dealership once I have already decided what vehicle I want, even down to the trim package. I have some expectation of what a fair price will be and am not going to spend hours busting some salesman's ballz just to save another $500-$1000.

In short, if you don't treat me like an idiot I'll give you your easiest sale of the day.

But then so many fukkin retard salesmen (see how that works, OP?) tor**** the sale by trying to push different trim packages or saddle with a color I don't want or some extended warranty crap, chitty financing (800+ FICO score here, brah - put your poverty high APR away), etc. That's when I deploy my only negotiating tactic: I get up and walk out.

I generally have to go to at least 3 dealerships before I find a salesman who isn't a douche.

You need to look at also that there paycheck (commision) is based on if they sell a car, so are they going to be straight up honest with you if they are not pushing alot of product. When i bought my car they were my best friend, but after i signed all the paperwork it was an attitude of, ok thanks GTFO....Mitsubishi isnt the best, but i wanted dat Evo.

any profession where you are more interested in making money than helping people or contributing to society is questionable.

the idea is predation: you want to find a sucker to finance a car, a house, get some insurance or securities, and the find the maximum amount of money you can get off them. so that you can pay yourself a bonus.

it's strange how most Americans think THAT is capitalism. 2007-08 is what happens when you have a society and economy that promote predation. the scum bags con the middle class out of their money, pay themselves bonuses... and when the deals go bad, the scum bags cry for the middle class to bail them out. and they pay themselves another bonus.

Is it really that bad? I recognize people like you and I generally get you in and out in about an hour and a half. Nice and easy, no hassle. Hopefully you like me enough to write me a review online


What do you usually try to pay as far as the car goes? Do you do KBB, edmunds, 500-1000 over invoice or what?

Dude people don't look down on you because they think you are incompetent, they look down on used car salesmen because you try to rip people off! They are almost always slinging garbage for much more than it's worth. I understand the need to charge a premium to be a profitable business but they could at least make sure the cars are 100% technically sound and all previous problems are fully disclosed. This is difficult to do with a car, e.g. how does the buyer know that the last owner ran the car with only 2 quarts of oil for a month?

I make very good money and I work about 48-50 hours a week. I know other people in the business who do the same



Keep in mind 50 hours is about normal nowadays. The 9-5 has been replaced by 8-6...plus I live 8 minutes from my job

I work at one of the best dealerships in the country. All of our used cars are in magnificent condition
