Great Mr Olympia 2013, politics are always a part of the sport and you always get a few placing hiccups due to the inherent sponsorship driven nature of the sport. But nonetheless an incredible showing from many athletes from the new and from the old blood.
Phil Heath was excellent at the pre-judging and brought just enough to the night show to take it. Politics aside i believe Kai Greene nailed the night show, fuller and more conditioned than Heath... by the time Phil and Kai were side by side waiting for the 1 and 2 place call Phil was much flatter than Kai but he had done all that needed to be done.
I think Kai deserved to win on sheer size alone however he was carring that film of water during pre judging and for Kai, and in fact for any multiple year runner up athlete... To knock off the reigning Mr. O means you have to come in SIGNIFICANTLY better than him. Kai did enough to in my opinion beat Heath but not enough to significantly beat him.
Then we have Dennis Wolf, great showing, has not looked this dominant at an olympia since his 2007 showing, he has really got that waist in check. I feel Shawn is already better than Wolf but not big enough... he has the perfect physique but does not yet have the size and he will fill out much later in his career, in my opinion he has another 5 years before he can fill out and bring his best physique, absolute structural perfection, great separation, just needs some work on size and the conditioning will come with muscle maturity.
Dex was exceptional even by his standards, very full and quite a surprise actually that he can keep bringing this fullness at 43. excellent result for dex... beaten for size by Shawn and Wolf clearly but he just has a classical flowing and pretty physique which many of the top guys in this sport do not have. Massive, freakish sure, but the other competitors are not 'Aesthetically pleasing' as Dex.
Then we have Jay, what a master of the sport, excellent attitude and fair placing. He could have placed lower but he has some of the best muscle maturity out there. An unfortunate look to his left bicep, torn and possibly a bad synthol patch up. Jay is keeping it together well but all those years of coming in at such a heavy weight has definitely taken its toll. Jays back, for Jay, well it just wasn't there to be honest. It looked good but it was not normal for Jay. Don't get me wrong he looked great but he is no longer the mass monster he once was. His waist was tight and looked good BUT due to his loss in overall size it looked significantly wider than it should have.
Roelly An excellent finish for him in 7th. A great genetic package and still very young. I wish the best for Roelly however i dont know if he can place much higher than 7th in the coming olympia's because of his height disadvantage and his frame might not be able to compete with some of the top guys.
nonetheless Roelly has a great future and he will be up in the top 10 for many many years to come.
That's my top 7
