He has a wide waist in that pose.
Incomplete as a perception?
From wiki
Perception (from the Latin perceptio, percipio) is the organization, identification, and interpretation of sensory information in order to represent and understand the environment.
2 people will not interpret incomplete the same so I can't use perception to see what you are seeing.

Take a look at his crab for example ;
You see how the waist disappears? It gives a better look to the MM, a fuller, more compact look since it unifies the waist with the rest of the body and the width of his shoulders obviously surpasses his waist's, therefore, you're not even analysing his waist size any more.
Now his usual crab looks like this ;
In a way, the waist unifies with the whole body, giving the illusion that waist size doesn't matter because you can't see it's extremities.
Phil's crab makes him look less full, like something is missing.
Look at the difference ;
This is his usual crab.
Still in crab but less bent over, already making him look fuller.
Then, fully straight ;

Those pics are so damn beautiful I had to quote. Seriously that MM is amazing like that. Makes kais arms stand out like no other pose does. Also, REALLY like Shawn's MM here.
To a degree (headache incoming) i agree with roro that Phil's bent over crab isn't that great. It looks way better when he isn't leaning forward so much. His quads disappear (which is what he is prolly trying to do anyway, iunno). I'd like to see him hit a hand clasp or crab the they way dexter with one leg forward

All right, listen, I'm sure you are actually a nice guy in his teens who has a thing for Kai and to a certain extent I actually share that feeling cause he IS a tremendous bodybuilder, we all love him, but you have to accept his condition wasn't on par with Phil at this Olympia, point.
It's not like you see it in a way and we all see it differently, it's a matter of fact.

In this picture, it seems better indeed.
Yes, that's why I posted the 2012 and 2009 picture. In that particular picture, as I've said, he's not fully flexed but it doesn't better, I didn't find a picture in the set I was looking through where his MM was fully hit.
Let's start with some pre-judging pictures where I find Kai comparable in conditioning.
(Open all in new tabs for them to be much larger)

There's a few things to take into count.
Kai has never had as much deep striations as Phil on the glutes but the conditioning itself is comparable.
Look here ;
Kai is in the middle of the camera (in the pre-judging picture) so he doesn't get the same shadowing effect Phil's glutes have, also, they pose differently, as you can see Kai's glutes are pushed outwards, Phil's glutes are flexed inwards.
Using this gif, yes, Phil seems more conditioned but it seems the gif is flawed since the side by side comparisons don't add up to this gif.
