I will be sixteen in about 6 months, and was looking in buying a streetbike. I've been fascinated by them for a long time now. At first I was looking at the ninja 250 and here are my cons of that bike.
Cons: small, sit up like moped riding position, probably grow out of it, don't like the sound of them.
So I kind of ruled that on out.
Next is the 650r. Don't really like this one either. There's something about the look of it I don't like. Handlebars are to high, and some other things.
Next is the zx6r. Yes, yes I know the zx6r is a racing bike, but there's something about it that just draws me in.
It's got the lower riding position that I like. Colors better, Bigger engine, won't outgrow it in a year, can keep up on our endless iowa highways, etc..
In iowa since I'm under 18 the msf course is required so I will be doing that. My dad has a motorcycle license so he can help me and give me tips. I am a very safety conscious person. I WILL not be riding like an idiot. Any time I even sit on the bike I will always have a helmet on. Whenever I ride I will have all the proper safety equipment I need.
I will also be buyig a used one like a 2008 model so when I do drop it I won't be scratching a brand new bike.
So what I'm asking is what do you guys think about my decision here?

You guys are all talking about people who died riding bikes like that where someone " ran a red light " or somethin like that, but that stuff could happen just as easily on a 250 as a zx6r
What's so dangerous about it besides the power and other drivers? No disrespect intended so don't start yelling at me.•Ariana Grandes bike seat crew•

jesus. so much THIS.
OP you're dumb as fuk. srs. if you think at 16 your riding talent exceeds even a 250 you're a moron.
I know guys that race and routinely lap others riding liter bikes while on a 500/600. on public roads, there is nowhere you can even use the power of a 600, not to mention how fast things get out of control. you don't even have experience driving yet, let alone the skill and reaction needed to safely ride a sport bike.
it matters not how safe you think you will ride, those bikes are designed WAY beyond the skill of the general public. there is a reason insurance is so high on them, and the death stats by age/bike are what they are.
goodnight sweet OP. make sure your parents take out life insurance policy out on you.
btw the 650r bars are high bcuz they are not clip ons. also you're 5'8". those seats are 31/32? i'm guessing that's higher than your inseam. you won't be able to reach both feet flat on the ground unless you lower the bike.

Here's the thing Opie. This is coming from a 22 year old, that has had his motorcycle license for all of 2 weeks and hasn't driven his car since he got his license and bike. I got a Kawasaki KLR650, a dual sport...A big dirt bike that you can ride on the street. It's super fun, has plenty of power and is VERY forgiving. I can run over potholes and hop curbs and whatnot. The bike can't do a wheelie even if I tried. And it does about 100mph top speed, but struggles at anything over 80.
It doesn't matter how "responsible" you are or (my favorite) you "respect" the bike. The fact of the matter is ANY supersport motorcycle's driver inputs are VERY sensitive. Acceleration, steering and most importantly, breaking. It takes very little input to do anything on a bike like that.
In my opinion, you buying a Zx6r as a first bike at 16 years old will most likely be a fatal mistake. I highly recommend starting on a dual sport, they are way more fun than a ninja 250 and will allow you to learn on something more forgiving.
I'm having a blast on my bike.

Your cons for the 250 are ridiculous. Yes it's not a huge bike, either is a zx6 (they weight close to the same) and guess what OP, you're not big either, you'll fit the bike fine. Moped position? Try standard motorcycle position, and still far more aggressive than a cruiser. What this means is it's easier to learn on, easier to manoeuvre at slow speeds etc. Yes you will grow out of it but guess what? You'll grow out of any bike, or want something different. No motorcyclist ever has bought one single bike and kept it forever, so that argument is invalid.
If you just don't want a 250 there are still plenty of other bikes out there that are far better choices than a SS 600. Ninja 300, CBR 500, gs500, ninja 500 even the SV650 is more user friendly than a SS600.
A 250 is plenty fast enough, see video below, sounds decent enough to me too

tbh OP, i would get the 250 at first. they hold value, well and like you said, if you drop it oh well. dropping a 250 wont decrease value nearly as much as a zx6r. and when youre done and comfortable on that bike as far as power goes, sell it and get the zx6r.
i always rep back.

I understand your thinking and Why you would think that way, because you are 16. and you are correct in thinking that the same thing could happen on a 250......but the power that you have at your disposal on a 250 is nowhere near the power of a 600. and believe me, that power is addictive and deadly.
my buddy that hit the cobalt was doing 80 when the light turned yellow.....it was his fault the he hit the car cause he decided to grab a handful instead of stop for the light. Now if he was on a 250 he would have probably stopped.
My other buddy had just traded in his 4 stroke Monster 600 (or whatever it was) for an R1......had been riding dirt bikes and motorcycles for 12+ years. He had that bike for 2 days before he put himself into a guard rail because he wasnt ready for the power. He wasn't even doing anything crazy, he literally came into a turn on an on-ramp a little too fast while on a Sunday ride with a few buddies.
The moral of the stories is that there is a HUGE difference in the size of the bike. but no matter the size there is always the risk because you are on a bike. Just be smart and start small.
Pretty sure i read a statistic somewhere that 98% of people who ride a motorcycle will fall within the firs 6 months, and damn if it aint true.( as far as i know)

I owned a sport bike shop and raced a few years... I know what I am talking about.
If you are going to get a bike, get the 250.
Your ego wants the 600 sexy sport, but it's hard to look cool and pick up chicks dead.
Girls at ur age have no idea, you will be a badass on a bike, 250 or 600.
So a 600 has e ought hp to kill you in a few seconds. 1/2 of a second distraction will kill you. Ask my dead friends, there are a bunch..
What you will learn on the 250 is how town handle the bike. The smaller the bike, the more you will learn.
If you really want a great bike that will progress with you, get an Suzuki sv650. There are even race classes just for these bikes. This is you best choice.
And good on ya for the dirtbike stuff, but
You will find that other than the
Controls, very little translates.

I just got my permit not long ago, got a Ninja 250 off of Craigslist against my better judgment, as I thought I'd outgrow it too soon and everything you're saying. It's really not true. I've laid my bike down twice now, luckily all by myself with no traffic around or anything like that. Things can spiral out of control really quickly, especially when you're first learning and aren't positive of how to react.
I'm very glad I got a 250, let alone a 600 or a 600R. Don't be a ****ing retard, get a 250 and learn what you're doing. And get your safety gear, too.MMMC

OP DO NOT BUY THAT. I just got my first bike at the age of 25 (gsxr600) and I know for a fact I would have died if I had it when I was an absolute idiot at the age of 16. Enjoy the best years of your life in one piece instead of splattered all over the side of the road.
Nothing is impossible.
