I think there's more to it. Sometimes they take their medals off not as a sign of disrespect but for whatever other reason.
He was obviously pretty annoyed that he came second, you can hardly be surprised. It was an extremely close decision on the score card (I believe); furthermore EVERYONE expected him to win that year. Even ronnie did.
The year that poor Robert Burnieka won the nationals was disgraceful. Competitors walked off-stage when he was announced as the winner and wouldn't return for a group shot, that was terrible sportsmanship.

And Ronnie killed him from the back. Flex has a great RDB but he couldn't match Ronnie in the hamstrings or glutes. Flex looked great but he missed his window of opportunity the year before when the title was wide open after Dorian retired. EVERYONE was expecting Flex to win in '98, especially after how great he looked at the Arnold that year. Ronnie probably would have been happy with making the top 5 (he was never in the top five before '98). Ronnie was the clear winner for me in '99. I was at the show both prejudging and night show and I thought he had it all the way. It really looked like Flex was going to throw his medal into the audience when he took it off because he was so pissed. Everyone started booing him for his bad sportsmanship when he did that.

natural o hit it on the head, but I definitely think flex should have at least one olympia title. His chest might've not been as huge, but I like how that makes his shoulders look relative to ronnie. Ronnie never had the shoulder pop that phil, flex, and markus ruhl have. Makes you look like a cartoon.

Really? If you see that as extremely bad.....do not go out in the real world.....just don't. You will be insulted every waking moment.
Its not like he did anything extreme.......
He took a moment for himself to take it all in................then did pictures. After that.....he has no obligation to wear it.
I have taken medals off after they were placed on me and pics were taken. (various sports, not bbing)
If you have played sports your whole life or even as a teen, you should understand this.

I wanted to see Flex win an O, and up against anyone else he would have. But Ronnie was just way better than everyone else.
Also yeah it may not have been the best display of sportsmanship, but you can't blame anyone in that position. Flex was arguably one of the best bodybuilders ever, and to be that, you have to have the mentality that you are THE BEST, every single day no matter who you compete against. So to come so close and to lose, it's not going to be an easily accepted defeat. I think he would have been less emotional about it had he placed 3rd or 4th. 2nd place imo makes it much more harder to take.

The 30 lbs Flex gained were not quality pounds.
X2..............
Ronnie did similar things at the 2002 GNC? Also, I don't remember Ronnie waving his finger claiming to be number 1 after Jay won the 2006 Mr. Olympia.Legends Of Bodybuilding!!! 1000's OF PICS OF YOUR FAVOURITE BODYBUILDERS!!!
