How long, after eating, should you wait to work out?

I was wondering how long you should wait after eating a meal before you can start working out? What duration would be most optimal?

Yup. Some people eat during their workouts. Personally I'd throw up everywhere, but people do it.

I have to wait at least 2 hours or I just feel heavy and slow. Personal preference.

He's implying the uselessness of traditional "pre-workout" meals. Food takes a while to digest.

I leave it at least 30mins after a snack and 2hrs minimum after a proper meal. Meal/snack size depending! I'll walk after a full meal, but nothing more strenuous.

What duration would be most optimal?
Whatever duration that allows you to get through your workout without your meal "revisiting" you would be most optimal.

WonderPug is correct! It's 137 minutes, 18 seconds to be exact for optimal gains...took me 5 years to nail it down, but there it is lady and gentlemen! Beginning your workout before or after that exact time will minimize your progress. Get out those stopwatch apps!

When you can go and perform your workout with enthusiasm lol. I wait 20-30 mins just to let the food settle but thats usually chicken and rice. If I had a big azz cheese burger and fries, I might need to wait a little longer. There is no official reccomendation so far as I know since there are so many variables.

those who fast will probably know that it takes a lot of time to digest.''

    http://www.madsci.org/posts/archives...2168.An.r.html

all food should have left the stomach within 2 to 4 hours

    that's almost for 100% digestion.

food takes energy out of the body if you don't wait several hours, your perfomance won't be the same.

you haven't felt the sleepiness after eating the last meal doing fasting :P

I must stongly disagree. I have perfomed heavy lifts 45 minutes after eating and noticed no difference as compared to not having eaten for about 3 hours. Your body only knows cals in and out...outside of having a full stomach making squats, DL's uncomfortable once when I went immediatly after a big meal, I would be hard pressed to believe that waiting 2 -4 hours would give any noticable difference in performance.

FYI: Digestion is an energy intensive process that also shunts blood flow.
