    PPL whilst cutting...

    Hey brahs

I posted the end of my 5 month bulk thread the other day, a lot of people said I should carry on bulking, a few said I should cut. The only person that knows what I want is me and I have decided to cut. Whether this is the right choice is not for debate in this thread.

I just want to know, seen as though my lifts are weak due to inconsistent routines whilst starting out, and currently I am using a routine with quite a lot of volume which I don't think I could keep up with whilst on a calorie deficit...do you guys think it'd be wise to start Coolcicada's PPL or even an upper/lower 4x a week whilst cutting to try and maintain/or even increase my strength? As this is the routine I'll be using again once I've cut down to a lower BF%

    Any help is appreciated.

Use the same routine you were bulking on.

    This.

You don't want to change routines while cutting because your CNS will have to acclimate to the changes which will result in an instant reduction in strength that you most likely won't get back for the remainder of your cut

    Thanks man

I currently do like 3x8-10 bench, and only hit muscles 1x a week but obviously at a much lower weight than what I should be lifting as opposed to 3x5 etc.

I just thought it would help me to go onto a strength routine with much more chance of linear progression, maybe I'm wrong...

You should focus on linear progression. Just start when you bulk again

also, you should reduce overall volume by two thirds

I've been progressing on my current split still whether it's more reps or more weight on the bar with every workout. I just didn't think it'd work out if I kept up the same amount of volume and low rest periods whilst in a deficit.

So should I do the same routine but instead do like 3x4-6 on my exercises or something?

I ran my same exact program while cutting, just reduced the volume. I kept the volume the same for my main compound movements to maintain as much strength there as possible but I did cut volume on accessories and isolations. I wouldn't reduce volume too much though because being in the gym and lifting weights expends calories and ups your TDEE. I actually did two thirds of the volume I was bulking on, not reducing it by two thirds. Over a 5 month period I lost 32 lbs and bench only went down 10lbs. All other lifts went up.

I think running a lower volume/higher intensity program on a cut can be a good thing. Your CNS will adapt, and you can gain strength on a cut that will still be there when it's time to bulk again. I think people mess up switching programs on a cut because they increase the weight and lower the reps, then they complain that they got week. No crap. Stop lifting heavy things and you get weaker.
    You can't help the hopeless.

stay on the same routine you were bulking on, even if you change though your CNS is still perfectly capable of adaptation, just not as efficiently.
lowering volume won't be necessary in the beginning (you can do so if you're more comfortable). I would lower volume as you get further into your cut though.

    Thanks very much everyone.

I'll only lower the volume when I feel like I'm struggling.

Once I'm around 10-12%BF I'll probably go on a PPL or U/L and stick to it this time whilst clean bulking properly.
