How to tune out other people at the gym? Music/ear phones not enough.

I never make eye contact with people and always have headphones; however I still get distracted often in the gym.... Mainly by other people. For example once I started squats and then I saw a man literally stopping (he was walking towards something, not even exercising and STOPPED to look at me) and it annoyed me so I stopped and re-racked. People claim that if you are absorbed enough into your workout that you won't notice others. For me that isn't true because I am hyper sensitive and super aware of other people via my peripheral vision etc. I find it hard to concentrate because I am so hyper aware of people around me.

It has nothing to do with not having a routine or being uncomfortable gym; I have been going to this place since Feb and know where everything is and have a routine. I just always feel "watched" or self conscious and I have a feeling it's something that will NEVER go away just because I am uncomfortable around people in general. I am not imagining it either; someone actually stopped walking to watch me squat and it pisses me off because it's not his business. I am aware of the fact that it may not even be perverted or ogling but just watching out of curiosity (perhaps he never saw someone squatting before) but either way it really annoys me.

How can I stop being hyper aware of my surroundings? Even though I never look at people directly I can still tell via peripheral vision and mirrors despite focusing VERY HARD on my own work out. I tried closing my eyes and visualizing that I am all alone in an empty room but it doesn't seem to help; I cannot block out the people.

And yes; I do wear headphones and listen to music and it's not enough to block everyone out.

You need to stop being paranoid and just work out If people are looking at you, they may just be mirrin' you. Take it as a compliment than anything else.

Focus on your equipment, and work hard, who cares about everyone else there! You're there for one reason... you..

Wear sunglasses??. Maybe they are watching your technique because they are unsure how to do it and maybe seeing how its done? I still do this sometimes with exercises I'm not too confident in.

Same here. I'm always learning new exercises and if I see someone doing one that looks like its working really well. I'll watch to see how it's done.

Honestly if you are so self-conscious about other people looking at you then don't workout in the gym at all. Go workout at home. The gym is the place for YOU. and ONLY YOU. If you are letting your own self-consciousness affect your workout then you need to get out of the gym

I know what you're talking about and if you're really into your workouts, focus more on your form and doing it right WITH people around you, that way your mind can prioritize the form. Alternatively, you can purchase dumbbells, a squat rack, or a home gym system and make space for it at home.

Ma'am you have problems, I suggest looking into why you're so hyper-sensitive rather than finding a way to block people out.

I saw this new girl in the gym (bigger than your stats) set up for 95lb squat. She put the cushion on the bar and all that..lol. I stopped to watch because thats really not that common to see. She unracked it and the bar starts sliding out of the cushion and she came really close to tipping over. Was sketch as fuk. But she was able to make it back to the rack just in time.

So maybe they were watching you for similar reasons. Just in case you dump the bar or went to heavy and were unable to come up.

How big was she? I never came close to tipping over when squatting and i use the safety bars. I don't use the pussy pad/tampon either. Ever. I'm small but I aint a pussy. I should post a vid soon so you can see how i squat at 95 lbs. Today was the first time i did 95 lbs for 5 reps tho. Before that i was doing 80lbs.

Since there are safety bars no real need for someone to help if someone can't get up tho no?

I'd say she's around 5'5" 130lbs. This was one of the racks that has no safety bars. It's made so that you squat out on the open floor. It seemed like she didn't have much experience if any. Though someone did give her a little tutorial after that. She might have been fine if she didn't use the cushion.

I always set the safety bars in case I fail and it's happened a few times. It's still kind of sketch and frowned upon but I figure accidents happen and that's what the pins are there for. But definitely need someone if I'm really pushing it because it's wreckless to try to max without a spot. The bigger the weight the more a spotter is required.

I try to always get atleast 8 reps out when squatting but shoot for 10+ ideally. Seems like you're making pretty good progress. But maybe look into finding a spotter to push harder with forced reps.

Yea; generally not a good idea to try 95 lbs the first time and better to start with an empty bar.

Could be that people are looking to see if I don't get hurt but to be honest that is kind of patronizing and sexist. I don't need special treatment or "saving" because I am female. If it were a male I am sure no one would look twice and not try to save the guy in case he failed.

Do you actually squat with a spotter? It looks gay as fukc and to be honest I would never ever do it. I do not talk to anyone at the gym and always go alone. I think I would be ok going heavy alone as long as I have the safety bars.

Yeah, obviously I have no idea why they were watching but for some reason I thought of that girl. I've had the bar pulled off of me a few times. Some guys came to "save" me though I'm a guy too.

And yeah I squat with a spotter sometimes. My spotter is always my brother and he knows me really well and I trust him. I wouldn't really want anyone else spotting me if I had the choice. Maybe we're gay incest brahs?

I could see how you'd be hesitant to do that though. I think it's good to have a spotter to get a feel for heavier weight and have that safety net. Get the CNS familiar with a heavier weight. What's the heaviest squat you've attempted?

Do you get mad when guys try to save you? How do you respond? When you were benching?

Not that heavy to be honest... but I may try "walk outs" where you just hold heavy weight without squatting so that your CNS gets used to it...

And yes; I do wear headphones and listen to music and it's not enough to block everyone out.
i hear ya, i can imagine it's annoying as hell

men are unfortunately cant help but think with their diks, you can tell many of em so desperately wanna meet/contact with some women in gyms..so pathetic...like men hangin out in female misc, posting their body pictures there
    cringe cringe cringe
the guys who look at u, probably think like "hmmm a girl at gym, so she is a attention seeking sloot"

thank god i'm a male nobody looks at me at gym. srs.

Not that heavy to be honest... but I may try "walk outs" where you just hold heavy weight without squatting so that your CNS gets used to it...
Yeah, I was benching. I don't get mad when they save me. I mean, it often times isn't totally necessary. I know how to recover but I may look a little more stressed so they might think it's necessary, idk.

I'm good at operating alone and often do stuff that I "shouldn't" do alone. Like pulling engines and transmissions from cars, moving large pieces of furniture, etc. I've adapted to performing tasks alone and I treat weight lifting no different. I always try to have a plan to stay safe if something goes wrong. I really want to keep all of my limbs and fingers and bones in one piece so safety is number one even though I'm being risky. Doing stuff alone so much I've realized how valuable a helping hand is, so I really appreciate when someone offers to help and take them up on it. I help others out when I find necessary too.
